Best Spring Break Destinations 2026 That Aren't Cancún

Every spring break, 100,000+ Americans descend on Cancún. Prices triple. Beaches become frat parties. The real Mexico disappears under a wave of package tourism.
There are better options.
The Alternatives
1. Medellín, Colombia ($40-60/day) Spring weather year-round. Incredible nightlife without the spring break chaos. Half the price of Cancún. Direct flights from Miami ($200-300 RT). Average age: everyone, not just 21-year-olds.
2. Punta Cana, DR ($50-80/day) If you want a beach trip, Punta Cana is cheaper than Cancún and less chaotic during spring break. But leave the resort — El Cortecito and Macao beach are the real experience.
3. Puerto Vallarta, Mexico ($50-70/day) Mexico's Pacific coast is dramatically less crowded than the Caribbean side during spring break. Better food, better vibes, actual Mexican culture.
4. Cartagena, Colombia ($50-70/day) Colonial beauty, Caribbean beaches, rooftop bars in the Walled City. More sophisticated than Cancún, cheaper, and with real cultural depth.
5. Oaxaca, Mexico ($35-50/day) No beach, but the best food in Mexico, mezcal culture, and zero spring breakers. The anti-Cancún.
6. San Juan, Puerto Rico ($60-90/day) No passport needed (it's a US territory). Old San Juan's colonial charm, El Yunque rainforest, and La Placita's nightlife.
The Mature Spring Break
The best version of spring break isn't a resort pool party — it's exploring a new city with a local who shows you the hidden spots, the late-night food, and the experiences you'll actually remember.
