Cartagena Travel Guide 2026: Beyond the Walled City

Cartagena de Indias is one of the most beautiful colonial cities in the Americas. The Walled City — with its colorful buildings, bougainvillea balconies, and cobblestone plazas — is worth every photo. But most tourists never leave it.

Beyond the Walls

Getsemaní — The neighborhood that locals actually love. Street art on every wall, craft cocktail bars in converted houses, salsa spilling from open doors. This was Cartagena's "rough" neighborhood 10 years ago. Now it's the creative heart of the city — and still affordable.

Bazurto Market — The real Cartagena in one chaotic, beautiful market. Fish, fruit, meat, spices, music, yelling. Everything you'd never find in the tourist zone. Come hungry.

Rosario Islands — 45 minutes by boat. Crystal water, small beaches, fresh seafood lunch included. Day trips run $20-30 from the dock.

La Boquilla — Fishing village north of the city. Mangrove kayaking, fresh ceviche, and zero tourists. A Local Friend here shows you Afro-Colombian culture that guidebooks ignore.

Food

  • Arepa de huevo — Fried corn arepa with an egg inside. Street vendors, $0.50
  • Ceviche de camarón — Fresh shrimp ceviche in plastic cups. Beach vendors and Bazurto
  • Cocadas — Coconut candy sold by palenqueras in traditional dress
  • Jugo de corozo — Deep red fruit juice unique to the Caribbean coast

Safety

The Walled City and Getsemaní are safe day and night. Beach areas have aggressive vendors but aren't dangerous. The main risk is overcharging — Cartagena has the highest tourist markup in Colombia. A Local Friend saves you from the tourist tax.
