Guadalajara World Cup 2026: Where to Eat, Drink, and Watch Games Like a Local

Founder of Roavi
Guadalajara — Mexico's second-largest city and the birthplace of tequila and mariachi — is hosting World Cup 2026 matches at Estadio Akron (Chivas' home). The city is going to be electric.
What Makes GDL Special
Guadalajara is more traditionally Mexican than Mexico City. The food is richer, the traditions deeper, and the hospitality more pronounced. Tapatíos (locals) are fiercely proud of their city.
Where to Watch Games
Centro Histórico — The main plaza will have big screens. Surrounded by colonial architecture, cantinas, and street food.
Chapultepec Avenue — GDL's main nightlife strip. Every bar will be showing matches. The street fills with fans between games.
Tlaquepaque — The artisan town adjacent to GDL. Watch games in a colonial courtyard with mariachi during halftime.
Where to Eat
Birria — Guadalajara's signature dish. Slow-cooked goat or beef stew. Mercado San Juan de Dios has dozens of birria stands.
Tortas ahogadas — "Drowned sandwiches." Pork sandwich submerged in spicy tomato sauce. Messy, perfect, uniquely tapatío.
Tejuino — Fermented corn drink with lime sorbet on top. Street vendors everywhere. $1.
Tequila — You're in tequila country. The town of Tequila is 1 hour from GDL. Tour agave fields and distilleries.
Getting Around
GDL has a decent bus system and a small metro. During the World Cup, use Uber or InDrive. Traffic will be significant near the stadium on match days.
The Local Advantage
GDL doesn't have the tourist infrastructure of Mexico City. English is less common. Tourist-facing businesses are fewer. This is what makes it authentic — and why having a local friend matters even more.
