Is Bali Safe for Americans? 2026 Travel Guide

Is Bali safe for Americans? Bali is one of the safest travel destinations in the world. Violent crime against tourists is virtually nonexistent. The Balinese Hindu culture emphasizes harmony and hospitality, and you will feel it the moment you arrive.
The real risks in Bali have nothing to do with crime — they are scooter accidents, ocean currents, and the occasional scam. Here is the complete guide for American travelers.
Getting There from the US
There are no direct flights from the US to Bali. The most common routes: - Via Tokyo (NRT/HND): LAX or SFO → Tokyo → Denpasar. ~18-20 hours total. - Via Singapore (SIN): LAX or JFK → Singapore → Denpasar. ~22 hours total. - Via Seoul (ICN): Several US cities → Seoul → Denpasar. - Via Doha/Dubai: East Coast cities → Qatar/Emirates → Denpasar.
Book the layover as a mini-trip — a night in Tokyo or Singapore breaks up the journey and adds another experience.
Visa for Americans
US passport holders get a Visa on Arrival for 30 days ($35 USD, payable in cash or card at the airport). This can be extended once for another 30 days at a local immigration office (~$30 USD).
Safe Areas
Essentially all tourist areas in Bali are safe:
Seminyak — Upscale beach area with restaurants, clubs, and boutiques. Safe, walkable, busy.
Ubud — The spiritual and cultural center. Rice terraces, yoga retreats, art galleries, temples. Very safe, very peaceful.
Canggu — The digital nomad hub. Surf breaks, co-working spaces, health-food cafes. Safe but the traffic is terrible.
Uluwatu — Clifftop temples and world-class surf breaks. Quiet, beautiful, safe.
Nusa Dua — Resort area with gated properties. The safest area on the island (and the most sterile).
The Real Risks (Not Crime)
Scooter accidents — The #1 cause of tourist injuries and deaths in Bali. Traffic is chaotic, roads are narrow, and most Americans have never ridden a motorbike. If you ride, wear a helmet, go slow, and avoid night riding. Grab (rideshare) works in tourist areas. Hiring a driver for the day costs $30-40 USD including fuel.
Ocean currents — Bali's west coast (Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu) has strong riptides. Swim only at beaches with lifeguards. If caught in a riptide, swim parallel to shore.
Monkeys — At Ubud Monkey Forest and Uluwatu Temple. They grab phones, glasses, water bottles. Secure everything before entering.
Money
$1 USD ≈ 15,800 IDR. Bali is cheap by American standards: - Warung meal (local restaurant): $2-4 USD - Nice restaurant dinner: $15-25 USD - Villa with pool (Airbnb): $30-60/night - Day with a private driver: $30-40 USD - Surf lesson: $20-30 USD
Use ATMs at banks (BCA, Mandiri) — avoid standalone ATMs and street money changers.
Why a Local Friend Makes Bali Better
Bali is easy to visit as a tourist — but the tourist version barely scratches the surface. A Balinese Local Friend takes you to the ceremonies their family actually attends, the temples where tourists are welcome but rarely go, the warung where the best nasi campur on the island costs $2, and the waterfall at 6am before anyone else arrives.
