Is Peru Safe for Americans? What You Need to Know

Is Peru safe for Americans? Peru is a safe and welcoming destination for American travelers. Machu Picchu is a bucket-list experience, Lima is the food capital of the Americas, and the Sacred Valley offers some of the most stunning landscapes in South America.
The US State Department rates Peru at Level 2 (Exercise Increased Caution) — the same as France and the UK. The areas of concern are specific regions (the VRAEM valley and some parts of the Colombian border) that tourists never visit.
Safe Areas
Lima — Miraflores, Barranco, San Isidro — The main tourist and residential districts. Safe, walkable, world-class restaurants. The Malecón boardwalk along the ocean cliffs is beautiful at sunset.
Cusco — The gateway to Machu Picchu. A charming colonial city at 11,150 feet altitude. The Plaza de Armas area is safe and touristy. The altitude hits hard — spend at least a day acclimatizing before hiking.
Sacred Valley — Ollantaytambo, Pisac, Chinchero. Safe, beautiful, and the altitude is lower than Cusco (better for sleeping).
Arequipa — The "White City." Colonial architecture, incredible food, gateway to Colca Canyon. Safe and undervisited.
Amazon (Iquitos, Puerto Maldonado) — Jungle lodges and river tours. Safe when booked through reputable operators.
Altitude Sickness (Serious for Americans Coming from Sea Level)
Cusco is at 11,150 feet. Most American cities are near sea level. The altitude will affect you:
- First 24 hours: Headaches, fatigue, shortness of breath
- Drink coca tea (it helps). Stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol the first day.
- Consider spending 1-2 days in the Sacred Valley (8,500 feet) before going to Cusco
- Diamox (prescription altitude medication) is available over the counter in Cusco pharmacies for about $3
Practical Info
- Visa: US passport holders get 183 days visa-free.
- Flights: Direct from MIA (6 hrs), LAX (8.5 hrs), JFK (7.5 hrs), IAH (6.5 hrs). LATAM and Spirit fly direct.
- Currency: Peruvian sol. $1 USD ≈ 3.7 PEN. Peru is affordable — a full ceviche lunch at a local restaurant costs $5-8 USD.
- Phone: Buy a Movistar or Claro SIM at Lima airport.
- Health: Drink bottled water everywhere except Lima (where tap is questionable). Yellow fever vaccine recommended for Amazon visits.
- US Embassy Lima: +51 (1) 618-2000
Common Issues
- Lima Centro pickpocketing — The historic center is safe during the day but watch your phone. Keep it in your front pocket.
- Cusco tourist pricing — Some restaurants near the Plaza de Armas charge 3x the normal price. Walk two blocks from the main square for local prices.
- Fake tour operators — Book Machu Picchu treks through reputable agencies. The Inca Trail requires a permit booked months in advance.
