Things to Do in New York City: 25 Spots Only Locals Know

New York City gets 60 million tourists a year. The vast majority see Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, and the Empire State Building. Real New Yorkers avoid all of these.
What New Yorkers Actually Do
The High Line at sunrise — Everyone knows the High Line. Almost nobody goes at 7am. At that hour it is empty, the light is perfect, and you feel like you own the city.
Domino Park, Williamsburg — Manhattan skyline views without the Manhattan crowds. Bring a picnic, watch the sunset, stay for the string lights at night.
The Cloisters — A medieval monastery in upper Manhattan. Part of the Met but feels like you teleported to 13th-century France. Almost no tourists make the trip.
Governors Island — A 10-minute free ferry from Lower Manhattan. Car-free, with art installations, food vendors, and the best Manhattan skyline panorama. Open May through October.
Smorgasburg, Williamsburg — Saturday outdoor food market with 100+ vendors. This is where NYC's food trends start before they go mainstream.
Sunset at DUMBO — Under the Manhattan Bridge in Brooklyn. The view through the bridge frame with the Empire State Building centered is the most iconic NYC photo that is not taken from a rooftop bar.
Washington Square Park — Especially on a warm Sunday afternoon. Street performers, NYU students, chess players, the fountain. This is the New York you see in movies.
Neighborhoods to Explore
East Village — The best bar neighborhood in the city. Dive bars, speakeasies, live music, ramen at 2am.
Jackson Heights, Queens — The most diverse neighborhood in the world. Incredible Indian, Nepali, Thai, Colombian, and Mexican food — all within walking distance, all under $12.
Bushwick, Brooklyn — Street art capital. Warehouses converted to galleries and bars. The creative energy is electric.
Harlem — Gospel brunch on Sunday, soul food at Sylvia's, jazz clubs at night. A side of NYC most tourists miss entirely.
Pro Tips from Locals
- Never eat in Times Square. Walk 3 blocks in any direction and the food gets 5x better at half the price
- Take the subway. It runs 24/7 and goes everywhere. Uber in Manhattan traffic is a waste of money
- Museums are "pay what you wish" on certain days — check each museum's schedule
- The best pizza is at the places with no Instagram presence and a line out the door
- Dollar pizza slices exist. They are not gourmet but they are a New York experience
A Local Friend in New York can take you to the restaurant their grandparents have been going to since 1972, the jazz bar with no sign on the door, and the rooftop where you can see both bridges at sunset without paying $25 for a cocktail.
