Things to Do in Istanbul That Tourists Always Miss

Istanbul is the only city in the world that sits on two continents. It has 3,000 years of history, 3,000 mosques, and some of the best food on the planet. Most tourists visit the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Grand Bazaar, and leave.

They miss 99% of what makes Istanbul special.

The Tourist Circuit (Still Worth Doing)

The Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque, Grand Bazaar, and Topkapi Palace are famous for a reason. Visit them. But go early (8am) or late (after 4pm) to avoid the worst crowds.

What Locals Actually Recommend

Balat — The most photogenic neighborhood in Istanbul. Colorful houses, antique shops, Greek Orthodox churches, and cafes in renovated Ottoman buildings. Instagram discovered it but it still feels authentic.

Kadıköy (Asian Side) — Take the ferry across the Bosphorus. The food market here is better than the Grand Bazaar for actually buying things to eat. The bar scene on Barlar Sokağı is where young Istanbullus go.

Princes Islands — A one-hour ferry ride from the city. No cars allowed. Horse carriages, pine forests, Victorian mansions, swimming in the Sea of Marmara. Feels like you left Istanbul entirely.

Karaköy — The waterfront neighborhood between the Galata Bridge and Galata Tower. Coffee shops, art galleries, and the best fish sandwiches in the city (from the boats by the bridge, 50 lira).

Ortaköy — Sunday morning at the Ortaköy Mosque with a kumpir (loaded baked potato) from the market. Bosphorus views, the bridge in the background.

Food You Cannot Miss

  • Breakfast — Turkish breakfast is a ritual. Not a meal. Expect 15-20 small plates, endless tea, and at least an hour at the table.
  • Kebabs — Not the döner you know. Adana kebab, iskender kebab, and pide (Turkish pizza) are all different and all incredible.
  • Baklava — Karaköy Güllüoğlu has been making baklava since 1820.
  • Çiğ köfte — Raw meatless meatballs wrapped in lettuce with pomegranate sauce. Street food perfection.

A Local Friend in Istanbul can take you to the hamam their grandmother goes to, the rooftop with the best Bosphorus sunset that does not charge $30 for a tea, and the neighborhood where you can buy the best spices for half the Grand Bazaar price.
