What is a Local Friend?

A Local Friend shows travelers their city the real way — the food spots, the nightlife, the hidden gems and the culture that guidebooks miss. You're not a tour company and there are no scripts. You're a trusted local who shares the place you love, right here in Miami.

What a local knows about Miami that the pictures don't show

Two things surprise almost every first-time visitor to Miami. It is not a walking city — the distances are American, and a plan that works in Barcelona falls apart here. And it is functionally bilingual: Spanish is not a tourist courtesy, it is how much of the city runs. Both of those are obvious to you and invisible from outside.

What you can show

  • 1

How the city is actually laid out and how long it really takes to cross. South Beach, Wynwood, Little Havana, Brickell, Coconut Grove and Coral Gables are separate worlds, and picking two well beats sampling six badly.

  • 2

Little Havana past the Calle Ocho block everyone photographs — a ventanita, a domino table, a bakery, the Cuban coffee ritual explained by someone who does it daily.

  • 3

Where locals eat: Haitian in Little Haiti, Colombian and Venezuelan in Doral and Kendall, Cuban everywhere. Miami's food is immigrant food and none of it is on Ocean Drive.

  • 4

Which beach on which day, and that the water changes completely between South Beach, Key Biscayne and the causeways. Also: Ocean Drive restaurant bills are the city's most famous tourist trap for a reason.

Say on your profile whether you drive and are willing to. In Miami that single fact changes what you can offer more than anything else about you, and it is the first thing a visitor wants to know.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a tour guide licence in Florida?

Florida does not have a statewide tour guide licence, and Miami-Dade does not require one for general guiding the way New York City does. Specific protected sites and the Everglades have their own permit rules for commercial operators. Roavi is not a tour operator — you are paid for your time as a local — but if you plan to build something bigger than that, look into the rules for the specific place you would be working.

I speak Spanish. Is that an advantage or is everyone here bilingual?

It is an advantage, and it also is not rare here. What sets profiles apart in Miami is the second thing: which community you actually belong to, which neighbourhood you know, what you would take someone to do. Spanish plus Cuban Miami, or Spanish plus the Venezuelan side of Doral, is a much stronger profile than Spanish alone.
