Punta Cana International (PUJ) is one of the easiest arrivals in the Caribbean. Open-air thatched terminals, short walks, and immigration that usually moves. The hard part is not getting off the plane — it is the ten minutes afterwards, when you are tired and everyone in arrivals wants to help you.
Here is what you need to know before you land.
Everything is priced by zone#
This is the one fact that makes sense of every quote you will be given. Transfers here are not priced by the kilometre; they are priced by which zone your resort sits in.

Find your zone before you compare any price. A quote that looks outrageous for "Punta Cana" can be completely fair for Uvero Alto, and a quote that looks fair can be double what Cap Cana should cost. Your hotel's confirmation email usually names the zone; if not, the hotel will tell you.
Note also that taxi fares are per vehicle, not per person. For a family of four, one taxi frequently beats four shuttle seats.
Your actual options#
The official taxi stand. Posted zone fares, no booking needed, always there. Perfectly fine for a daytime landing and a Bávaro hotel. Agree the fare at the stand rather than with a driver who approaches you.
A pre-booked private transfer. Someone waiting with your name on a sign. Costs a little more than the taxi stand and removes the entire decision from the end of a long travel day. Worth it if you land at night, have children, or are going to Uvero Alto.
The resort shuttle. Check your booking rather than assuming — packages sold through tour operators often include it, the same hotel booked direct often does not. When included it is usually a shared coach that waits to fill and stops at several hotels. Free but slow, which is a good trade at noon and a bad one at midnight.
Ride-hailing. Works around Bávaro. Does not work for airport pickup — the taxi concession holds that, and drivers will generally decline. Do not build your arrival around it.
The desks that are not transport#
Between baggage claim and the exit you will pass several friendly desks offering help with your transfer, sometimes at a startling discount.
Some are genuine transfer companies. Others are timeshare and vacation-club sales. The free or cheap transfer is the hook; the price is a ninety-minute presentation at your resort, usually on your first full morning.
They are pleasant, they will already know your hotel name, and they are not doing you a favour. The rule that covers it: at an airport, anything offered to you for free is being paid for with your time.
Arriving at night#
PUJ takes a steady stream of evening arrivals from North America and Europe, and the arrivals hall after a late landing is the worst possible place to work out zone pricing.

Should you rent a car?#
Probably not. The things worth seeing are far apart, Dominican traffic is fast and improvisational, and rental insurance excesses here are not trivial.
For a day out to Macao or Higüey, hiring a driver for the day typically costs less than a rental plus fuel plus the excess — and comes with someone who knows the roads.
Getting it sorted before you land#
