Cancún's best feature is what's around it. The Yucatán is one of the easiest regions in the world to explore in day trips.

Isla Mujeres#
Ferry from Puerto Juárez, golf cart, Playa Norte (one of the best swimming beaches in Mexico), fish tacos, Punta Sur cliffs. It is simple and almost everyone loves it.
Chichén Itzá#
The one you came for. Leave by 7am by ADO, driver or tour; be inside at 8am before the heat. Then Valladolid's pastel centre for lunch and a cenote swim on the way home. A guide or Local Friend matters here: the site's signage is thin and the story is extraordinary.
Tulum#
Ruins on a cliff over the sea, early, then a cenote. Dos Ojos and Gran Cenote are the famous ones; smaller ones along the Ruta de los Cenotes near Puerto Morelos are cheaper and emptier. Things to do in Tulum and Cancún vs Tulum vs Playa del Carmen.
Cozumel#
Ferry from Playa del Carmen. Palancar reef, Chankanaab, a rented scooter round the wild east coast. For water people.
Akumal and the cenote route#
Akumal's turtles (go early, use a certified guide, no touching), and the cenotes off the Puerto Morelos road: Verde Lucero, Siete Bocas, La Noria. Half-day, cheap, uncrowded. Boat tours from Cancún.
Skip#
The four-stop bus combos (Tulum, Cobá, cenote, Playa in one day) that give you an hour at each. Pick one or two places and do them well.
Back in Cancún#
Things to do, first time in Cancún, on a budget, with kids, is Cancún safe?, airport transfers.
Go with someone from the Yucatán#
Which cenote is empty, which ferry to catch, where the real cochinita is in Valladolid: a Cancún Local Friend knows. They set their own rates and message you before you meet.
Explore the Yucatán with someone who lives there.

Isla Mujeres for the easiest beach day, Chichén Itzá for the one you'll remember. If you have two days of trips, do both.Is Chichén Itzá doable in a day from Cancún?
Yes: 2.5 hours each way. Leave by 7am to arrive before the heat and the cruise crowds. Combine with Valladolid's centre and a cenote like Ik Kil or Suytun. ADO buses run direct, or hire a driver. How do you get to Isla Mujeres from Cancún?
Ultramar ferries from Puerto Juárez or the Hotel Zone every 30 minutes, about 20 minutes crossing. Rent a golf cart on the island, swim at Playa Norte, eat at the fish restaurants. Is Tulum a day trip from Cancún?
Yes, about 2 hours by ADO bus or colectivo. Ruins early, a cenote (Gran Cenote or Dos Ojos) after, the beach if time allows. Tulum town itself is nicer than its reputation. Can you do Holbox in a day from Cancún?
Technically (2 hours to Chiquilá plus a ferry), but you'd spend five hours travelling for three on the island. Stay at least one night.
