Is Mexico City Safe? What You Need to Know in 2026

Mexico City has an undeserved safety reputation. Most of what people fear is based on news about other parts of Mexico — not the capital. CDMX (as locals call it) is a massive, vibrant, cultural powerhouse of 22 million people, and the tourist areas are generally safe.

The Reality

Mexico City is safer than many American cities statistically. The neighborhoods that tourists visit — Roma, Condesa, Polanco, Coyoacán, Centro — are well-policed, walkable, and full of life at all hours.

Safe Neighborhoods

Roma Norte — The most popular neighborhood for travelers. Tree-lined streets, incredible restaurants, coffee shops, bookstores. Safe to walk at night on main streets.

Condesa — Beautiful parks, Art Deco architecture, running paths, outdoor cafés. Very safe, very walkable.

Polanco — Upscale shopping and dining. The safest neighborhood in the city. Museums, galleries, Chapultepec Park.

Coyoacán — The Frida Kahlo neighborhood in the south. Colonial architecture, weekend markets, university energy. Safe and charming.

Centro Histórico — The historic center around the Zócalo. Busy during the day, quieter at night. Stick to main streets after dark.

Practical Tips

  • Use Uber or DiDi for transportation. They are cheap and safe
  • The metro is clean and efficient. Avoid rush hour (7-9am, 6-8pm) when it gets very crowded
  • Keep your phone in your front pocket, especially on the metro and in Centro
  • Drink bottled water
  • Street food is safe — eat where locals eat, look for busy stalls
  • Learn basic Spanish. CDMX is not as English-friendly as tourist cities in Asia or Europe

The Earthquake Factor

Yes, Mexico City is in an earthquake zone. Major earthquakes are rare. Buildings in Roma/Condesa are built to modern seismic codes. Know the evacuation routes from your hotel. That is about it.

The Truth

The biggest risk in Mexico City is not crime — it is eating so much incredible food that you cannot fit into your clothes when you fly home.

A Local Friend in Mexico City can navigate the sprawling metro system, take you to the taco stand where the line is 30 deep at midnight (which means it is the right one), and show you the murals that no guidebook mentions.
