Is Santa Marta Worth Visiting? As the Base for Tayrona, Minca and the Lost City, Yes; the City Itself, Less So

A straight answer: Santa Marta is worth visiting as the base for what is around it, Tayrona National Park, Minca in the hills, Taganga and the Lost City trek, and for a cheaper, less polished coast than Cartagena. The city itself has a small restored centre and a working port, and most people stay a night or two and move on. Who it suits, Santa Marta or Cartagena, how long and when.

Santa Marta is the city people pass through on the way to the best nature on Colombia's coast, and the honest answer is that passing through is about right.

The short verdict#

You wantWorth it?
Tayrona, Minca, Taganga, the Lost CityYes, this is the base
A cheaper, less touristy coast than CartagenaYes
A beautiful colonial cityNo, that is Cartagena
A beach in the cityNo, El Rodadero is ordinary; Tayrona is the beach
A week in the city itselfNo, two nights

What makes it worth it#

Tayrona, the national park an hour east: jungle paths to Cabo San Juan and Arrecifes, beaches between boulders, camping and hammocks. Minca, forty minutes up into the Sierra Nevada: coffee farms, waterfalls, hostels with views, cool air. Taganga, the fishing bay over the hill, with dive shops and boats to Tayrona. Palomino, further along, for the river tubing and the beach. The Lost City, Ciudad Perdida, a four-day trek through the Sierra to a Tayrona city older than Machu Picchu. The centre of Santa Marta itself, restored around the Parque de los Novios, is a good evening. Cartagena vs Santa Marta has the honest comparison; the airport transfer guide the arrival.

What makes it not worth it#

The city is hot, scruffy and busy; the beaches in town and at El Rodadero are ordinary. Outside the centre it needs city rules at night. If a week is for one coastal city, Cartagena is the city and Santa Marta is the nature.

How long and when#

Two nights for the city, four or five with Tayrona and Minca, more for the Lost City. December to March is driest; Tayrona closes for about a month at a time a few times a year for the park's recovery, so check the dates. The Colombia itinerary for where it fits.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is Santa Marta worth visiting?
As a base for Tayrona, Minca, Taganga and the Lost City, yes. For the city itself, a night or two: a small restored centre, a seafront and a port. It is the nature capital of the coast, not the beautiful one.
  • Santa Marta or Cartagena?
Cartagena for the colonial city, the walls and the islands; Santa Marta for Tayrona, Minca and the mountains. Four hours apart; a week on the coast does both. Cartagena vs Santa Marta has the comparison.
  • How many days in Santa Marta?
Two for the city, four or five with Tayrona and Minca, a week or more if you add the Lost City trek, which takes four days on its own.
  • Is Santa Marta safe?
The centre, El Rodadero and the visited areas are fine with city rules; the market and the areas beyond the centre are not for wandering at night. Tayrona and Minca are safe with ordinary care.
