Santo Domingo is the oldest European city in the Americas — founded in 1496. It is vibrant, musical, warm, and massively underrated as a travel destination. But is it safe?
The Honest Answer
Santo Domingo is safe for tourists who stay aware of their surroundings. The Zona Colonial is well-patrolled and walkable. Most visitors have a great time with zero incidents.
Safe Areas
Zona Colonial — The historic center. Well-lit streets, restaurants, bars, museums. Police presence is strong, especially on weekends. You can walk around until midnight comfortably.
Piantini / Naco — Modern business districts with malls, restaurants, and hotels. Very safe, well-maintained.
Gazcue — Quiet residential neighborhood next to the Malecón. Safe to walk during the day.
The Malecón — The oceanfront boardwalk is busy and safe in the evening. Great for sunset walks.
Areas to Avoid at Night
North of Zona Colonial — Once you cross past the main tourist streets heading north, the neighborhoods change. Stick to the colonial center.
Villa Mella / Los Alcarrizos — Residential areas with no tourist infrastructure. No reason to go there.
Practical Tips
- Use Uber or DiDi for transportation — cheap and safe
- Get a Claro SIM card at the airport for data and maps
- Carry a copy of your passport, not the original
- Drink bottled water
- Learn some Spanish — Dominicans are incredibly warm and will go out of their way to help you if you try
- Do not walk around with expensive cameras hanging from your neck
