The JR Pass is no longer a reflex. It's a calculation, and the calculation takes two minutes.
The maths#
- List your long-distance train legs.
- Look up the point-to-point fares (fixed; the JR sites and any fare calculator have them).
- Add them up for the 7, 14 or 21 days you'd hold the pass.
- Compare with the pass price. Add the Nozomi supplement if you insist on the fast train.
Typical results#
| Route in 7 days | Pass vs tickets |
|---|---|
| Tokyo only | Pass loses badly; use a Suica |
| Tokyo → Kyoto → Tokyo | Pass loses |
| Tokyo → Kyoto → Osaka → Tokyo | Pass loses |
| Tokyo → Kyoto → Hiroshima → Tokyo | Around break-even |
| Tokyo → Kanazawa → Kyoto → Hiroshima → Tokyo | Pass wins |
| Tokyo → Sendai → Aomori → Hakodate → Tokyo | Pass wins clearly |
The Nozomi rule#
The pass covers Hikari and Kodama on the Tokaido line; Nozomi and Mizuho need a supplement. Hikari adds about 25 minutes Tokyo–Kyoto. Tokyo to Kyoto has the trains.
Alternatives#
- Point-to-point tickets: fixed price, bookable online, no commitment.
- Regional passes: Kansai, Hokuriku Arch, Tohoku, Kyushu, Hokkaido; one area for a fraction of the national pass.
- Discount tickets: Puratto Kodama for the slow shinkansen; early-bird web fares on some lines.
- Flights: for Tokyo–Sapporo or Tokyo–Fukuoka, often cheaper and faster.
What the pass does well#
Flexibility: hop on, change plans, no booking (seat reservations are free). On a long, loose itinerary that's worth something. On a fixed Tokyo-Kyoto trip it's worth nothing.
In the plan#
Tokyo vs Osaka vs Kyoto for how to split the days, day trips from Tokyo (none need the pass), how much a Japan trip costs.

Is the JR Pass worth it for Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka?
No. A Tokyo–Kyoto shinkansen each way plus local trains between Kyoto and Osaka costs well under a 7-day pass. Buy point-to-point tickets and use a Suica locally. When does the JR Pass pay off?
On long routes with several shinkansen legs in the validity period: Tokyo to Kyoto to Hiroshima and back to Tokyo in seven days is around break-even; adding Kanazawa, Nagano, Tohoku or a Hokkaido leg tips it clearly in the pass's favour. Fourteen-day passes with a lot of movement also work. Can I take the Nozomi with a JR Pass?
Only with a paid supplement ticket, introduced in 2023. Without it the pass covers Hikari and Kodama on the Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka line, which add 25 to 90 minutes. Many pass holders find the Hikari perfectly fine. What are the alternatives to the JR Pass?
Point-to-point shinkansen tickets (fixed price, bookable online), regional JR passes (Kansai, Hokuriku, Tohoku, Kyushu) that cover one area for much less, and discount tickets like Puratto Kodama for the slow train. For Tokyo alone, a Suica.
