Medellín in three days is a story (the city that changed), a rock (Guatapé) and a neighbourhood night. Here's the order.
Day one: Comuna 13 and the Centro#
9am Comuna 13: the escalators, the murals, a tour with a guide who grew up there (book one from the neighbourhood). Noon The Metrocable over the hills from Acevedo or San Javier, the city from above. 2pm The Centro: Plaza Botero's sculptures, the Museo de Antioquia, Parque Berrío, a bandeja paisa lunch. Leave the Centro by dusk. Night A fonda in Laureles or Envigado: aguardiente, music, the real Saturday.
Day two: Guatapé#
Bus from the Terminal del Norte at 7 or 8, two hours. El Peñol's 740 steps before the heat, the view over the green reservoir, then the town: the painted zócalos, the plaza, lunch by the water, a boat if you like. Back by evening. The full Guatapé guide.
Day three: Laureles, Arví, El Poblado#
Morning Laureles: a café on La 70 or Circular, the stadium neighbourhood, the Medellín paisas actually live in. Midday The Metrocable to Parque Arví for the forest and the market. Dusk El Poblado's hills: Provenza's restaurants, a rooftop, then a salsa or crossover bar (nightlife the local way).
Four days or more#
The 4-day itinerary adds Jardín or Santa Fe de Antioquia (day trips). A week: a coffee finca overnight and the Cartagena flight.
Practical#
Airport to the city (45 minutes down the mountain), where to stay (Laureles for locals, El Poblado for nightlife), is it safe?, first time in Medellín, on a budget, alone, for couples, the month you're coming. Spanish? Itinerario de 4 días.
