New York's night is not in Times Square and not on a rooftop with a cover charge. It is in bars with no sign on the Lower East Side, in Bushwick warehouses, in a jazz basement in the Village, a comedy cellar for the price of a drink, and a diner at four in the morning. Here is where New Yorkers go out, neighbourhood by neighbourhood, with the hours, 2026 prices and the subway home.
By neighbourhood#
The Lower East Side and the East Village. The densest bar scene in Manhattan: dive bars, cocktail bars behind unmarked doors, small music venues, late pizza and dumplings. Ludlow, Orchard and Rivington on the Lower East Side; St. Marks, Avenue A and the streets around Tompkins Square in the East Village. Loud on weekends, better on a Thursday.
The West Village. Jazz in basements (the Village Vanguard, Smalls, Blue Note), cocktail bars in brownstones, small restaurants that serve until midnight. The night for a couple or for anyone who wants to sit and listen.
Hell's Kitchen. Ninth Avenue from the 40s to the 50s: the bars where the theatre crowd and the people who work in the theatres drink after the show, and the city's main gay bar strip. Where to go after a Broadway ticket instead of Times Square.
Williamsburg and Greenpoint. Brooklyn's night out: bars on Bedford and along Grand, music venues, rooftops with a skyline, clubs that run until six. The L train from 14th Street is ten minutes.
Bushwick. The warehouse parties, the art-space clubs, the dive bars under the elevated train, tacos at any hour. The night that starts at one in the morning. The L to Jefferson or Morgan.
Harlem. Live jazz and blues in small rooms, the Apollo's amateur night on Wednesdays, soul food until late, and gospel brunch on Sunday if the night ran long.
Queens. Astoria for Greek tavernas, beer gardens and Egyptian cafés until late; Jackson Heights for the Colombian and Nepali places open past midnight; the 7 and the N are twenty minutes from Midtown. Nobody here is a tourist.
Midtown and Times Square. Ten minutes, once, if you have never seen it. The bars and restaurants around the square are the worst value in the city.
The hours#
Dinner at seven to nine. Bars fill from ten. Clubs from midnight, and the good hours are one to four. Last call is 4am by law and many bars use it. Happy hour, about five to seven, is the cheapest way to drink in Manhattan. Thursday is the New Yorkers' night; Friday and Saturday bring the suburbs and the queues. Sunday night is quiet except for industry bars and jazz.
What it costs#

Comedy, jazz and the free things#
Comedy. New York has the best stand-up rooms in the world and the cheap ones are the point: a basement in the Village or on the Lower East Side, ten to thirty dollars and two drinks, and the comedian you saw on television drops in unannounced. Jazz. The Village basements, Harlem's small rooms, and the late sets after midnight, which are cheaper. Free or nearly free. Museums on their pay-what-you-wish evenings, summer concerts in the parks, the Staten Island Ferry at sunset with a can from the bodega, the Broadway lotteries, and the bar with a back room where the band plays for tips.
What you will not find#
A dress code outside a handful of clubs. A reason to pay a 30-dollar cover for a rooftop when a park or the ferry has the same view. A last train. And a quiet bar on the Lower East Side on a Saturday.
Getting home#
The subway runs all night. Between midnight and 5am ride in the conductor's car, in the middle of the train, and avoid empty cars; keep the phone away from the closing doors, which is when it gets snatched; and check your line's late-night route, because some trains run local or reroute after midnight. A rideshare is the alternative and surges after the bars close; a yellow cab hailed on the street is fine in Manhattan. Walk with purpose, phone in the front pocket, and the night is safe. Is New York safe has the detail; solo travel in New York the rules for going out alone.
With a New Yorker#
The bar with no sign, the comedy room that is good this month, the Bushwick party worth the trip, the dumpling counter open at two: a New Yorker's night is a set of specific doors, not a map. Several New Yorkers are listed on Roavi as local guides by the hour (Roavi calls them Local Friends): a photo, their borough, their languages and an hourly rate they set. You message them directly, agree the night and the price, and Roavi takes no commission. Their profiles are above.
A New Yorker's night out, not the tourist one.
