Five days is the right length for a first trip to Puerto Rico. Here it is day by day, with what to eat and what it costs.
Day 1: Old San Juan#
Morning. Walk the old city before the cruise passengers arrive: Calle del Cristo, the Catedral, La Fortaleza, the blue cobblestones. El Morro at opening (one ticket, about $10, covers San Cristóbal too), then the lawn and the walls.
Afternoon. Lunch of mofongo in the old city, then San Cristóbal and its tunnels. The cemetery below El Morro from the wall above.
Evening. Paseo de la Princesa at sunset, dinner in the old city, a drink on Calle San Sebastián. The nights, in detail.
Day 2: El Yunque, then a bio bay#
Morning. El Yunque early, with the timed-entry vehicle reservation for the main road (book it on recreation.gov ahead or the day before). La Mina falls or Juan Diego, the Yokahú tower. It rains most afternoons; go early.
Lunch. The Luquillo kiosks, a row of food stands by the beach: alcapurrias, empanadillas, fish, a cold Medalla. Swim at Luquillo Beach.
Night. The Laguna Grande bio bay in Fajardo by kayak through the mangrove channel ($50 to $70). Go near the new moon if your dates allow.
Day 3: Culebra#
The ferry from Ceiba to Culebra (about an hour from San Juan by car; the ferry is cheap but sells out, so book the moment tickets open). A short taxi to Flamenco Beach: white sand, clear water, the old tank on the sand, kiosks for lunch. Snorkel at Carlos Rosario if you have the energy. Back on the afternoon ferry.
Day 4: the mountains or the west#
Option A, Guavate. An hour south into the mountains on the Ruta del Lechón: whole roast pigs, rice with pigeon peas, live music, a Sunday crowd. Best on a weekend.
Option B, Rincón. Two and a half hours west: surf (in winter), a calmer town, the lighthouse, the best sunsets on the island. Better as a night than a day trip.
Day 5: Santurce, Piñones and the last night#
Morning. Santurce: the murals of Calle Cerra, the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico, coffee and pastries.
Afternoon. Piñones, fifteen minutes east: the kiosks frying bacalaítos and alcapurrias, coconut water from the shell, the bike path through the mangroves.
Evening. If it is Thursday or Friday, La Placita de Santurce. If not, a last dinner in the old city and a walk on the walls.

In 3 days, or 7#
Three days: days 1, 2 and 5. Seven days: add a night on Vieques for Mosquito Bay (the brightest bio bay) and the wild beaches, and do Rincón as two nights instead of a day.
Before you go#
The Culebra ferry and the bio bays depend on calm seas; December to April is the most reliable. Hurricane season is June to November, peaking August to October. Rip currents on the north coast are the island's real danger. Is Puerto Rico safe?
With someone who lives here#
Whether the Culebra ferry is running, which bio bay is bright this week, which lechonera in Guavate: someone from the island knows. Roavi has no Local Friends listed in Puerto Rico yet, so ask on the San Juan community board.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 5 days enough for Puerto Rico?
For a first trip, yes: it covers Old San Juan, El Yunque, a bio bay, an island beach, the mountains or the west coast, and the food and nights of the city. Three days covers the city, the rainforest and a bio bay. Seven adds a night on Vieques or two in Rincón.Do I need a car for this itinerary?
For days 2 and 4, yes, or tours. Days 1 and 5 work on foot and with Uber. Day 3 needs a ride to the Ceiba ferry (a car, a shuttle or an Uber) and nothing on Culebra but a short taxi to Flamenco. How much does 5 days in Puerto Rico cost?
In 2026, per person without flights or hotel: about $500 to $900 at a mid budget, covering a rental car for two or three days ($50 to $90 a day plus gas), El Morro ($10), the El Yunque reservation, a bio bay kayak tour ($50 to $70), the Culebra ferry, food ($50 to $90 a day) and a night out. Hotels run $130 to $450 a night in San Juan in high season. When is the best time to do this trip?
December to April for dry weather and calm seas (the Culebra ferry and the bio bays depend on both), booking the ferry as soon as tickets open. May to August works with afternoon rain. September and October are peak hurricane season; travel insurance and flexible bookings matter most then.
