San Juan goes out on Thursday, not Saturday. Here is where to go each night, where to dance, what it costs, and how to get home.
La Placita de Santurce: Thursday and Friday#
A produce market by day; on Thursday and Friday nights the square and the streets around it become the city's biggest street party. Every bar plays its own music, people dance salsa outside, and the crowd is everybody: students, families, people coming from work. Arrive after nine; it runs past midnight.
Old San Juan: Calle San Sebastián and around#
The old city's bars cluster on and around Calle San Sebastián: cocktail bars in colonial houses, dive bars, live salsa and bomba nights during the week. Friday and Saturday are the busiest. In January, the Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián (SanSe) take over the whole old city for four days.
Where to dance salsa#
Old San Juan's bars have live bands on set nights and often a short lesson early in the evening; La Placita's bars play salsa outside on Thursday. Bomba, Puerto Rico's Afro-Caribbean drum dance, has its own nights; if you see one advertised, go. Which bar has the band changes week to week; ask.
Santurce's Calle Loíza#
The neighbourhood's restaurant and bar street: craft cocktails, natural wine, small live-music bars. Quieter than La Placita, later than Condado.
Condado and the hotels#
Hotel bars and lounges along Ashford Avenue, a few clubs, and the hotel casinos in Condado and Isla Verde. Polished, pricier, easy.
Reggaeton clubs#
This is where reggaeton comes from. The clubs in Santurce and around Condado open late (after eleven) and run until the early morning; cover $10 to $20, dress up a little.
What to drink#
Medalla, the local light beer, cold. A chichaíto, a small sweet shot of anise and rum. Rum from here: Don Q, Bacardí from across the bay. And the piña colada, which San Juan claims as its own.
What it costs, 2026#
| Medalla in a local bar | $3 to $5 |
|---|---|
| Cocktail | $10 to $16 |
| Chichaíto | $3 to $5 |
| Club cover | $10 to $20 |
| Uber across the metro | $10 to $25 |

Which night#
- Thursday: La Placita.
- Friday: La Placita, then Old San Juan.
- Saturday: Old San Juan, the clubs.
- Sunday afternoon: Piñones and the beach kiosks.
- Weeknights: live salsa in the old city, Calle Loíza.
Getting home#
Uber, always, between neighbourhoods. Keep your drink in sight at La Placita and the bars. Do not walk quiet residential streets after midnight. Is Puerto Rico safe?
With someone who lives here#
Which bar has the salsa band tonight, whether La Placita is busy this week, where the bomba night is: someone from San Juan knows. Roavi has no Local Friends listed in Puerto Rico yet, so ask on the city's community board.
