Real. Rent a Local Friend (sometimes written RALF) was founded in 2012 in Rio de Janeiro by Alice Moura, picked up by the press in 2013 and 2014, and is still online. On 28 October 2026 its home page described itself as "a travel Community platform that connects people around the world to live the local spirit of different cities" and claimed 2,610 Local Friends, 8,067 travellers, 382 travel agencies and "over 1,500 reviews".

Those are the company's own counts and cannot be checked from outside. What the independent sources question is not whether the site exists but how many profiles are active and answer, which is the thing that matters when you have a flight booked.

What the reviews say#

Two independent sources, both small:

• A travel-planning site's review, last updated 2 October 2023, gave it 3.5 out of 5. Prices "generally reasonable" at US$15 to US$50 an hour, most tours two to six hours, profiles approved before they can offer tours. Complaints: tour quality varies with the guide, and last-minute cancellations happen.
• Trustpilot, on 28 October 2026: one review, one star. The traveller paid a one-off subscription fee to contact guides, got no replies, and asked why the site charges if it cannot tell which profiles are active.

One review is not a verdict either way. It does match the pattern across this whole category (RentAFriend's reviews say the same thing: good people, stale profiles, a wall before you can message), which is why the useful question is who answers, not who exists.

How much it costs#

The site publishes no price list on its home page. From the sources above: each Local Friend sets an hourly rate, typically US$15 to US$50; there has been a one-off fee to contact guides; Local Friends are offered paid plans ("choose the plan that matches your goals") that are not priced publicly; travel agencies pay a yearly partner membership. Read the site's own terms before paying, and treat any number in an article, including this one, as dated.

There are no jobs. There are listings: you build a profile, it is approved, you set your rate, and travellers message you or a travel agent matches you. Nobody employs you, there is no schedule and no guaranteed income, and if you pay for a plan you pay before anyone has written to you.
