"Rent a travel companion" comes with "hire a travel companion", "rent a travel buddy", "rent a travel partner" and, from the other side, "paid travel companion jobs". People mean three different things, and the cheapest one is usually the best.
The three things people mean#
| What it is | What it costs | When it makes sense | |
|---|---|---|---|
| A companion for the whole trip | A paid person who travels with you | Their daily rate plus their flights, rooms and meals | Older or disabled travellers through an agency; otherwise rarely |
| A travel buddy | Someone who travels with you and splits costs; not paid | Nothing, but you share everything | Long trips, backpacking, when you find the right person |
| A local by the hour, in each city | A Local Friend who lives there and spends a few hours with you | $15 to $50 an hour, for the hours you want | Almost every trip |
Why the local by the hour wins for most trips#
You do not need company at the airport, on the train or in your room. You need it for the afternoon in the market, the night out, the neighbourhood you would never find, the game, the dinner you did not want to eat alone. A Local Friend gives you exactly those hours, from someone who actually lives there, in their language and yours, with no flights to pay for and nobody to get tired of by day four. In a two-week trip across three cities, three Local Friends for an afternoon each costs less than one companion's first flight.
How it works on Roavi#
On Roavi you browse and message Local Friends free; the only money that changes hands is the friend's own hourly rate (most list $15 to $50), paid to them directly, with no commission. Every profile is reviewed by a person before it goes live and carries three real photos, reviews from previous meetups and an optional identity-verified badge. Meetups are platonic and in public. The honest caveat: Roavi is strongest in Latin America and Asia, with a growing but still thin US list (New York, Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, Phoenix, Nashville and a few others). You message before you arrive, agree the plan, meet in public when you land. Rent a friend for a day is the one-day version.
If you want a travel buddy instead#
The free version is real and slower: how to find a travel buddy and the country pages (USA, Mexico, Thailand). Many people do both: a buddy for the trip, a Local Friend for the city.
Safety#
The same rules as any paid company: meet in public, keep your own transport, agree hours and rate before you meet, tell someone where you are. Prefer profiles with reviews and a human review behind them. Is rent a friend safe?.
The other side: paid travel companion jobs, honestly#
Most "get paid to travel as a companion" listings are scams, unpaid, or something else wearing the name. The real agency jobs exist (companions for older or disabled travellers) and are few. The repeatable version is being a Local Friend in your own city: visitors pay you by the hour to show them around, you set the rate, Roavi takes no commission. Paid friend jobs, honestly.
Browse local guides free, message free, pay only the friend's own rate.
Meet local guidesEvery city where you can do this today, with the live number of Local Friends in each: rent a friend, by the hour. In the United States the list is also by state.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you rent a travel companion?
Yes, three ways: a paid companion who travels with you for the whole trip (expensive, and you cover their costs), a travel buddy who splits costs and is not paid, or a Local Friend in each city for a few hours at a rate they set, which is what Roavi does and is the cheapest and safest for most trips. How much does a travel companion cost?
A full-trip companion costs their daily rate plus their flights, rooms and meals, often more than the trip itself. A Local Friend by the hour costs $15 to $50 an hour in most cities, for the hours you want company, with no travel costs. Travel buddies cost nothing but split the bills. Are paid travel companion jobs real?
A few are (companions for older or disabled travellers, usually through agencies), but most 'get paid to travel as a companion' listings are scams or unpaid. The real, repeatable version is being a Local Friend in your own city: visitors pay you by the hour to show them around, at your rate, with no commission on Roavi.
