Things to Do in Miami: A Local's Guide Beyond South Beach

Miami is one of the most culturally rich cities in the United States. Most visitors see South Beach, Ocean Drive, and maybe Wynwood. But Miami is actually a collection of neighborhoods, each with its own identity, food, and energy.
Beyond South Beach
Little Havana — Calle Ocho (8th Street) is the heartbeat of Cuban Miami. Ventanitas (walk-up coffee windows) serving cortaditos, domino games in Máximo Gómez Park, live salsa music, and the best Cuban food outside of Havana.
Wynwood — The street art neighborhood. But beyond the murals, Wynwood has become a serious food and drink destination. Breweries, cocktail bars, Asian-Latin fusion restaurants.
Coconut Grove — Miami's oldest neighborhood. Bohemian energy, bayfront parks, outdoor cafes under banyan trees. Feels like a different city from South Beach.
Design District — High-end fashion and art galleries in a walkable outdoor setting. Free art installations everywhere. Institute of Contemporary Art is free admission.
Key Biscayne — A 15-minute drive from downtown but feels like a Caribbean island. Bill Baggs State Park has the most beautiful beach in Miami with almost no tourists.
Food
Miami's food scene is defined by Latin American and Caribbean immigration. This is not "Tex-Mex." This is the real thing.
- Versailles (Little Havana) — The most famous Cuban restaurant in America. Lechón asado, ropa vieja, Cuban sandwich. Go for lunch when it is packed with actual Cubans.
- Ceviche from any Peruvian restaurant in Doral — Miami has the largest Peruvian community outside Peru. The ceviche in Doral rivals Lima.
- Haitian food in Little Haiti — Griot (fried pork), diri ak djon djon (black mushroom rice). Chef Creole is the classic.
- Colombian bakeries in Doral — Pan de bono, empanadas, buñuelos. Fresh every morning.
- Stone crabs — October through May. Joe's Stone Crab is famous but has a 2-hour wait. Locals go to Garcia's on the river.
The Vibe
Miami runs on its own clock. Dinner starts at 9pm. Going out starts at midnight. The beach is for mornings. The pool is for afternoons. Life happens outside.
A Local Friend in Miami can take you to the Cuban coffee window their abuela has been going to for 40 years, the beach that nobody posts on Instagram, and the art gallery opening where free wine flows until midnight.
