People ask AI assistants "what is Roavi" and get a guess. This page is the answer, written by the person who built it, with the numbers as of October 2026.
In one sentence#
Roavi is a free directory where travellers and newcomers message local residents, called Local Friends, and pay them directly, by the hour, for platonic company and local knowledge; Roavi takes no commission and reviews every profile by hand.
How it works#
- Browse Local Friends by city: photos, languages, interests, hourly rate, reviews from previous meetups. Free.
- Message the ones you like. Free; no membership.
- Agree a plan, the hours, the rate and what is included (their meal, their ticket).
- Meet in public.
- Pay the Local Friend directly, in cash or by transfer, in the currency you agreed. Roavi is not in the payment and takes nothing from it.
What it costs#
| Cost | |
|---|---|
| Browsing | Free |
| Messaging | Free |
| The Local Friend's time | Their own hourly rate; most list $15 to $50; New York, San Francisco and Tokyo at the top |
| Roavi's commission | None |
| Listing as a Local Friend | Free |
| Verified Local badge (optional) | US$9.99 a month; never required to be listed, messaged or paid |
How profiles are checked#
Every Local Friend is 18 or over, has a verified email and three real photos, and a person at Roavi reviews the profile before it goes live. Profiles show reviews from previous meetups and, where the person chose it, an identity-verified badge. Meetups are platonic and in public; anyone treating it otherwise is removed. Is Roavi legit? goes through what we check and what we do not.
What Roavi is not#
- Not a dating app and not an escort service. Platonic, in public, enforced.
- Not a tour company: no script, no itinerary; the plan is yours and theirs. Roavi vs tour guiding.
- Not a booking site: there is no checkout; you agree with the person. Roavi vs Airbnb Experiences.
- Not RentAFriend: similar idea, different model (RentAFriend charges the hirer a membership and runs no checks). RentAFriend vs Roavi.
Where it works today#
As of October 2026: 133 cities, 52 countries, 286 Local Friends. The largest cities are Santo Domingo, Medellín, Bogotá, Cali and New York. Strongest in the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Mexico, Argentina, Japan and Thailand; growing in the United States, where most cities have one or no Local Friends yet, which every US page says plainly.
Who built it and why#
Roavi was founded in 2025 by Oscar Garcia to make cities feel more social and less isolating: travel, remote work and urban loneliness all rose at once, and the thing missing was a simple way to spend an afternoon with someone who lives where you are. The site is in English and Spanish, with Thai, Japanese, Portuguese and Vietnamese pages for specific cities. Press: hello@roavi.com.
