Where to Stay in Bogotá: Chapinero vs La Candelaria vs Usaquén vs Zona T, and Where It's Safe

Bogotá is huge and the right neighbourhood matters more than in most cities: Chapinero for food and nightlife, La Candelaria for history (and care at night), Usaquén for calm, the Zona T and Parque 93 for upscale. Who each suits and what's safe.

Bogotá is a city of eight million spread over a high plateau, and the distance between areas is real. Choose the neighbourhood by what you'll do most, and by how comfortable you want to feel at night.

Chapinero#

The best all-round base. Zona G has the city's best restaurants, Quinta Camacho the prettiest streets and boutique hotels, Chapinero Alto the cafés and bars. Central enough to reach the historic centre and the north easily.

La Candelaria#

The historic centre: the Gold Museum, Botero, the colonial streets, the cheapest hostels. Wonderful by day. At night it empties and some streets are poorly lit, so take taxis and choose a hotel on a main street. Many visitors base in Chapinero and spend their days here.

Usaquén and the north#

Usaquén has a village feel, a famous Sunday flea market and good restaurants; Parque 93 and the Zona T have the upscale hotels, bars and shopping. The calmest and most comfortable areas, further from the centre.

Safety, briefly#

Stay in the areas above, use taxi apps at night, keep your phone out of sight on the street, and don't wander into unknown neighbourhoods after dark. Is Bogotá safe? goes into detail, and Bogotá airport to the city covers arrival.

Timing#

Bogotá in November is the rainy value month; December to March is drier. The Bogotá travel guide has the rest, and Bogotá vs Medellín if you're choosing.

Ask someone who lives here#
