Bangkok does New Year's Eve big: fireworks over the river, a concert stage in the middle of the shopping district, boats full of dinner parties on the Chao Phraya, and rooftop bars that sell out weeks before. Here is how the night usually works, so you can pick the version you want.
A note on dates: as of October 2026, the programme for the night of December 31, 2026 has not been announced. Bangkok's big venues usually publish lineups in November and December. This guide is based on how the countdown has run in recent years, and the venues have been the same ones year after year.
The two big countdowns#
| Where | What it is | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| ICONSIAM, on the river | The big riverside show: fireworks, drones and light over the Chao Phraya. In recent years it ran as a multi-day festival ending on the 31st | Free public areas |
| CentralWorld, city centre | The countdown concert with Thai pop acts and fireworks over the square, often called Bangkok's Times Square | Free, very crowded |
CentralWorld is the one for a crowd, a concert and a party. Roads around it close in the evening, so come by BTS to Chit Lom or Siam.
ICONSIAM is the one for the fireworks. You can watch from the public riverside area, from a riverside hotel or rooftop, or from a boat.
Other ways to spend the night#
- A dinner cruise on the Chao Phraya. The best view of the river fireworks, with dinner included. Book weeks ahead; the good boats fill up.
- A rooftop bar. Bangkok's rooftops sell New Year's tickets with a set menu or open bar. Expensive and often sold out by December. Our guide to rooftop bars covers which are worth it.
- Khao San Road. A loud, packed street party. Fun if that's what you want, not if it isn't.
- A ticketed concert or festival. Large concerts have been held at stadiums around the city on the 31st.
- The Thai way. Many Thais start the year at a temple, making merit around midnight. Some temples hold chanting through the countdown. Quiet, and something few tourists see.
How to plan the night#
- Arrive early. About 9pm for a good spot at CentralWorld or the river.
- Use the trains and boats. The BTS, MRT and river boats beat any taxi on the 31st. In past years the trains have run late on New Year's Eve; check the 2026 announcement.
- Plan your way home first. Just after midnight, taxis and ride-hailing are nearly impossible and surge prices are high. Stay close by, or wait an hour for crowds to thin.
- Book the ticketed things now. Cruises, rooftops and hotel parties are the first to go.
- Mind the crowds. Front pocket for your phone, a meeting point for your group, and agree any tuk-tuk price before you get in.
Bangkok in the week around New Year#
December is Bangkok's best weather: dry, sunny and comfortable. It is also peak season, so book rooms early. Bangkok in December covers the rest of the month, and where to stay in Bangkok helps you pick a base near the river or the BTS.
