The Best Things to Do in Santiago, Dominican Republic

Santiago de los Caballeros doesn't have a beach, and it doesn't need one. Here's what actually fills a few days in the Cibao's biggest city.

1. Tour La Aurora Cigar Factory

Running since 1903, La Aurora is the oldest cigar factory in the Dominican Republic. Watching torcedores hand-roll cigars is genuinely impressive, and buying direct from the factory costs a fraction of duty-free shop prices.

2. Catch Las Águilas Cibaeñas at Estadio Cibao

Dominican winter league baseball, October through January, is some of the best live sports value anywhere — tickets are $3–10 and the crowd energy is closer to a playoff game than a regular-season one.

3. Climb the Monumento a los Héroes de la Restauración

Santiago's hilltop monument overlooks the entire city and the Cibao valley. Go near sunset for the best light and the smallest crowds.

4. Day Trip to Jarabacoa

An hour into the mountains, Jarabacoa is noticeably cooler than the valley floor and home to Jimenoa waterfall — one of the better swimming spots in the DR that most Punta Cana visitors never hear about.

5. Eat Pica Pollo and Chicharrón de Pollo

Santiago's fried chicken culture runs deep. Every corner has a stand; the ones worth lining up for have usually been there two decades.

6. Drink Real Mamajuana

Rum, red wine, and tree bark, soaked according to whatever recipe a family has passed down. The homemade version served in Santiago has little in common with the bottled tourist version sold elsewhere in the DR.

7. Carnaval de Santiago (February)

One of the biggest Carnaval celebrations in the Caribbean. Lechones — masked, costumed characters — parade through the streets. If your trip lines up with February, this alone is worth the visit.

8. Río Yaque del Norte

The longest river in the DR runs through Santiago, and on weekends locals swim, picnic, and hang out along its banks. Bring a cooler and find a spot under a tree, the way santiagueros do.
