Hoyo Azul is the photo that makes people book Punta Cana excursions: a small pool of electric-blue water sitting at the foot of a tall limestone cliff, surrounded by jungle. The photo is real. Here's what visiting it is actually like.
What it is#
Hoyo Azul ("blue hole") is a natural freshwater pool — a cenote-style sinkhole fed by underground water — at the base of a cliff about 75 metres high. The colour comes from the clear water over a pale limestone bottom, and it's most intense when the sun is high enough to light the pool but not so high that the crowds have arrived.
Where it is#
It's inside Scape Park, an adventure park in Cap Cana, the private resort community just south of Punta Cana's airport. From most resorts in Bávaro and Punta Cana it's roughly 20–30 minutes by road. From Uvero Alto it's closer to an hour. More on the area: the Cap Cana guide.
How you visit#
Because it's inside the park, you visit Hoyo Azul with a Scape Park ticket. The park sells packages that combine it with other activities — zip lines, a cave, buggies or a cultural stop — and you walk to the pool on a short jungle trail.
You can book through your hotel's tour desk, but you can also book directly and take a taxi or transfer, which gives you more control over your time. Prices and packages change, so compare the current options before you go.
The best time to go#
First thing in the morning. The pool is small, and by late morning it can feel crowded, especially on days with cruise or big-group visits. Early, you get better light, cooler air and a calmer swim.
What to bring#
- Swimsuit and a towel
- Water shoes — the rocks are slippery
- Reef-safe sunscreen and insect repellent
- A waterproof phone pouch if you want photos from the water
- Cash for tips and drinks
Is it worth it?#
Yes, if you want one beautiful nature stop close to the resorts, or you're combining it with the park's other activities for a half day.
Maybe not, if you'd rather spend your excursion day on a boat or a long beach — the Saona Island trip or a day at Juanillo beach are better for that. Our honest ranking of the options: Punta Cana excursions worth it.
Make a day of the area#
Cap Cana has one of the prettiest public-facing beaches in the region at Juanillo, and the marina has good places for lunch. If you'd like the day to include places a tour won't show you — a beach where Dominicans go, a real lunch spot, a colmado with music — a Local Friend in Punta Cana can plan it with you. You message them directly on Roavi and agree the day together.
