Punta Cana is built for staying still. That's exactly why one or two day trips change the whole holiday: you remember the Dominican Republic instead of a pool.
Day trips ranked#
| Trip | Travel time | Time needed | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saona Island | 1.5h to Bayahibe, then boat | Full day | The classic. Do it once. |
| Santo Domingo (Zona Colonial) | 2h each way | Long day | Best if you want the real country |

| Samaná whale watching | 3.5h each way | 12 hours | Jan–Mar only, extraordinary |
| Catalina Island | 1.5h to La Romana, then boat | Full day | Quieter Saona, better snorkel |

| Party boats | On the coast | 4 hours | Skip unless that's your trip |
Saona Island#
The postcard. Boat or catamaran from Bayahibe, a stop at the natural pool with starfish, lunch on the beach. It is busy: pick a smaller boat or an early departure. Full guide: Saona Island day trip.
Santo Domingo#
Two hours west on the motorway and you're in the oldest European city in the Americas. The Zona Colonial, the first cathedral, the Malecón, a proper Dominican lunch. Tours do it in a day; so can you with a driver. Zona Colonial guide and Santo Domingo to Punta Cana for the road.
Hoyo Azul and Scape Park#
A cenote so blue it looks edited, at the foot of a cliff near Cap Cana. Part of Scape Park, a paid park with caves, zip lines and a beach club. Go early. Hoyo Azul guide.
Samaná whales (mid-January to March)#
Humpbacks breed in Samaná Bay every winter. From Punta Cana it's a long day on the road, but seeing a whale breach a hundred metres away is worth a day of anything. Whale watching in Samaná.
Catalina Island#
Smaller, less crowded, better reef. Boats from La Romana. If you've done Saona, do this.
Macao and Higüey: the local day#
Macao is the public beach locals use, with surf schools and fish shacks. Higüey has the basilica and a real Dominican market. Neither needs a tour: a Local Friend with a car does both in a morning for far less than any excursion. Related: Punta Cana off the resort and are Punta Cana excursions worth it.
What to skip#
Party boats (unless that's the trip), "see everything" combos that spend the day on a bus, and anything sold by someone who approached you on the beach. Tourist traps in Punta Cana has the list.
Do a day trip with a Dominican#
A Local Friend from Punta Cana knows which Saona boat is small, which day the Higüey market is best, and what a fair driver price is. They set their own rates and message you before you meet.
Leave the resort with someone who knows the way.
