Tulum's headlines have made a lot of people wonder whether they should have booked Cancún instead, and a lot of Cancún visitors wonder whether the quieter Tulum is safer. All three towns sit in the same state at the same advisory level, so the real question is where the risk actually is in each, and whether it touches the trip you are planning.
The short version#
| Cancún | Playa del Carmen | Tulum | |
|---|---|---|---|
| US advisory | Level 2 (Quintana Roo) | Level 2 | Level 2 |
| Policing | Heaviest, especially the Hotel Zone | Heavy on Fifth Avenue | Thinner, spread between town and beach |
| Where incidents cluster | Downtown bars late, rarely the Hotel Zone | Around nightlife, late | Late-night venues and the trade behind them |
| Everyday nuisances | Taxi overcharging, timeshare selling | Pickpockets on Fifth, taxi fares | Overpriced everything, dark beach road, taxis |
| Transport | Uber and DiDi work; hotel taxis | Walkable centre; colectivos | Taxis only on the beach road, expensive |
| Verdict | Safest for most visitors | About the same | Safe by day; the night is the variable |
Why Tulum's reputation changed#
Tulum grew from a sleepy town to a glossy party destination in a decade, and its infrastructure and policing did not keep up. A large, cash-heavy nightlife economy appeared, and competition over supplying it with drugs produced violence: almost always late at night, in or immediately around specific venues, between people involved in that trade. Tourists have been caught in it, which is why it made international news and why it would be dishonest to wave it away.
The pattern is consistent, though, and it is avoidable: it happens late, at parties, near that trade. Visitors who do the ruins, the cenotes, the beach and dinner have the same uneventful trip they would have in Cancún. Is Tulum safe goes through it properly, including the beach road at night.
Why Cancún is safer than its headlines#
The headlines are mostly about other states. Mexico's advisory is state by state, and the Level 4 states are 800 to 2,000 miles from Cancún. Within Quintana Roo, the Hotel Zone is the most protected ground in the state because it is the state's economy. What goes wrong for visitors in Cancún is overcharging, pressure selling and, for a small minority, late-night choices downtown. Is Cancún safe has the detail and the taxi rule.
Playa del Carmen, between the two#
Playa's Fifth Avenue is a long pedestrian strip that stays busy and policed until late, which makes it feel the safest of the three on foot. The risks are small-city ones: pickpockets in the crowd, taxi fares, a few blocks off the strip where the town stops being for tourists. Is Playa del Carmen safe covers where that line is.
The one rule on this coast#
Do not buy drugs. Not from a beach club, a taxi driver, a promoter or a friendly stranger. In Cancún, Playa and Tulum alike, this single decision separates almost all the visitors who have a serious problem from the ones who do not. It matters most in Tulum because the trade there is the most contested.
Which to pick, by trip#
- First time, family, or you want it easy: Cancún. Calm beaches, hospitals, every transport option, and the most to do within two hours.
- Walkable town with a beach and day trips: Playa del Carmen. Cozumel by ferry, cenotes by colectivo.
- The look, the cenotes, the ruins by the sea, and you will be in bed by midnight: Tulum, staying in town or at a beach hotel rather than at the party end of the beach road. If what you wanted from Tulum was the quiet it used to have, alternatives to Tulum names where that went.

Ask someone who is there#
Roavi has no listed Local Friends in Cancún, Playa del Carmen or Tulum yet, so the honest advice is to ask the city board, where people who live on the coast and travellers who just left answer: Ask Cancún community: Cancún, Playa or Tulum for a first trip, and what would you avoid at night? →
Live on the Riviera Maya and speak English? Visitors are asking before anyone is listed: become a Local Friend in Cancún.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Tulum safer than Cancún?
No. For ordinary tourism both are safe, but Cancún's Hotel Zone is the most heavily policed place in Quintana Roo, while Tulum's incidents in recent years have clustered around its late-night party scene and the drug trade behind it. By day, at the ruins, cenotes and beaches, Tulum is uneventful. Is Playa del Carmen safer than Cancún?
About the same. Fifth Avenue is busy and policed late into the night; the risks are pickpocketing in crowds, taxi overcharging and the same rule as everywhere on the coast: do not buy drugs. Away from the tourist blocks it is an ordinary Mexican town.Is Tulum safe from cartels?
The violence that reached the news in Tulum was tied to competition over supplying its nightlife and happened late at night, in or around specific venues, between people involved in that trade. Tourists have been hurt, which is why the one rule matters: do not buy drugs in Tulum, from anyone.Which is safest for a solo female traveller?
Cancún's Hotel Zone or Playa del Carmen's centre, because there are people and police around at every hour and transport is easy. Tulum's beach road is dark and spread out at night, so a solo woman depends more on arranged transport.Which is safest for families?
Cancún, then Playa del Carmen. Both have calm beaches, hospitals and mature infrastructure. Tulum works for families who stay in the town or at a beach hotel and skip the nightlife, which is most of the risk.
