Medellín is the most-discussed city in Latin America on travel forums, because its reputation and its reality are far apart and visitors want someone to tell them which is which. Four forums do that; they are good at different things.
The forums, compared#
| Forum | Who answers | Best for | Weak at |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Medellín subreddit | Expats, nomads, paisas | Safety, scams, the current mood, nightlife honesty | Can be jaded; search before posting |
| TripAdvisor Medellín forum | Visitors, a few guides | Guatapé, Comuna 13, tours, airport logistics | Anything about living in the city |
| Expat Facebook groups | Long-stay foreigners | Apartments, visas, coworking, nomad life; the groups explained | Short-trip questions get buried |
| Roavi Community, Medellín board | Local Friends who live in Medellín, travellers | A plan checked by a resident; prices; which barrio; the answer can become a person | New and small |
What to ask where#
Is it safe, is this a scam, what about drink spiking: Reddit first, then is Medellín safe?, then a resident on Roavi for your specific plan.
Guatapé in a day, Comuna 13 with or without a tour, airport to El Poblado: TripAdvisor has it answered.
Apartment in Laureles vs. Envigado, coworking, a month's budget: the expat groups and the digital nomad guide.
Which salsa bar on a Thursday, is this tour price fair, what would a paisa do with my Saturday: Roavi Community, where the person answering lives in Medellín and has a profile you can open. Many are Local Friends you can hire for an afternoon.
Why a small board can be the right one#
The Medellín subreddit has thousands of members and your question gets ten opinions, some of them from people who left in 2019. Roavi's board has a handful of threads and the reply comes from someone who was in Laureles this morning. For 'which is better' questions, use the big forum. For 'is this right for me, this week', use the small one.
