Punta Cana's coast has one wind, one reef and four kinds of catamaran. Know which boat you're boarding.
The four#
| Tour | Length | On board | For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Party catamaran | ~3 hours | Open bar, DJ, 40–80 people | Groups, twenties, bachelorettes |
| Snorkel catamaran | ~3–4 hours | Reef stop, natural pool, families | Couples, families, snorkellers |
| Saona catamaran | Full day | Catamaran one way, speedboat the other | Everyone, once |
| Private charter | Half or full day | Your group | Families, groups of 8+ |
The party boat#
Three hours of rum and reggaetón with a stop at the shallow natural pool off the coast. Fun if that's the point (bachelorette guide); miserable if you wanted to see fish.
The snorkel boat#
Same coast, lower volume: a reef stop with gear included, the natural pool, sometimes a glass-bottom section. The right one for families and couples.
Saona#
The excursion everyone does: a catamaran out along the coast (or back), a speedboat the other way, the natural pool with starfish you must not pick up, lunch on the island. Weekdays are quieter. The full Saona guide.
Private#
Your boat for your group: route, music and pace yours, priced per boat so it's reasonable from eight people up. Book direct with a marina operator in Cap Cana or Bávaro.
Booking#
The resort desk is convenient and marked up; booking direct or online is cheaper and gives you a cancellation policy. Wind cancels catamarans, so in summer and autumn book something refundable. Excursions worth it, tourist traps, fishing and boat charters.
Bring#
Cash, reef-safe sunscreen, a tied hat, a dry bag, water shoes, a towel, motion tablets. Shade is scarce; the sun is not.
Ask someone there#
Which operator's boat was good last week, which day is windy, whether the natural pool was clear: post your dates on Roavi Community and Local Friends who live here answer. A Local Friend also knows the fisherman with the small boat that isn't on any list.
Which boat? Ask someone from Punta Cana before you book.

What's the difference between the catamaran tours in Punta Cana?
Party catamarans are short, loud and boozy with a natural-pool stop. Snorkel catamarans are calmer with a reef stop. The Saona catamaran is a full day to the island with the natural pool on the way. Private charters are your boat, your route, priced per group. Is the Saona catamaran or speedboat better?
Most Saona tours use both: a catamaran one way (slow, music, drinks) and a speedboat the other (fast, bumpy, fun). Catamaran-only tours exist and are longer and calmer. Weekdays are quieter on the island. What should I bring on a Punta Cana catamaran?
Cash for tips and beach vendors, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat that ties, a dry bag for your phone, water shoes for the natural pool, a towel, and motion-sickness tablets if you're prone. Shade is limited.Does seaweed affect catamaran tours?
Rarely: the boats go to the reef and the natural pool, which usually stay clear, and Saona's beaches face away from the worst of it. Wind is what cancels a catamaran, not sargassum. Book with a free-cancellation policy in summer and autumn.
