If you want sun at Christmas, Punta Cana is one of the easiest places to get it: a short flight from the US East Coast, warm dry weather, and resorts that go all out for the holidays. It's also the most expensive and most booked-up time of the year. Here's what it's really like, and how to plan it.
It's peak season: book early#
Christmas week and the week of New Year's are Punta Cana's busiest dates. Flights and resorts cost more than at almost any other time, and the most popular places fill up.
The best time to book is late summer or early autumn. By November, choice shrinks and prices climb. If your dates are flexible, the first two weeks of December and the second week of January are noticeably calmer and cheaper than the holidays themselves.
The weather#
December and January are among the best months of the year: warm, sunny days, cooler evenings, a warm sea, and little hurricane risk. Sargassum seaweed is usually at its lowest in winter. Expect highs in the high 20s °C (low-to-mid 80s °F). Month by month: Punta Cana weather by month.
Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve at the resorts#
Most resorts put on a gala dinner on December 24 and December 31: a special menu, decorations, live music, and on New Year's Eve, a countdown and usually fireworks on the beach at midnight.
One thing to check before you book: on some all-inclusive plans the gala dinners are included, and on others there's a supplement — sometimes a mandatory one. It's in the booking terms; read them.
Expect the à la carte restaurants to be booked solid on those nights, so reserve as soon as you arrive.
New Year's Eve outside the resort#
For a night out, Punta Cana's big venues run special New Year's Eve parties: the show club Coco Bongo and the cave club Imagine are the famous ones, and the beach bars along Bávaro and El Cortecito get busy too. Tickets for the big venues sell out, so buy ahead. The full scene: Punta Cana nightlife.

The Dominican Christmas most visitors never see#
Outside the resort gates, Christmas in the Dominican Republic is a long, loud, family season — and one of the best times to see the country.
- Nochebuena (December 24) is the main event: a big family dinner that usually includes roast pork, rice with pigeon peas, pasteles en hoja (plantain-dough parcels wrapped in leaves), and a Russian-style potato salad.
- "El angelito" is the Dominican version of Secret Santa, played at work and among friends through December.
- Ginger tea (té de jengibre) and ponche are the season's drinks.
- Parrandas: groups going house to house with music, especially in the countryside.
- Día de Reyes (January 6) — Three Kings' Day — is when many children get their presents, and it closes the season.
Music is everywhere: merengue and bachata Christmas songs play from every colmado.
The way to see this side of the season is with someone who lives there. Local Friends in Punta Cana are locals you message directly on Roavi — for a Dominican Christmas dinner spot, a night where locals dance, or a beach where families spend the holidays.
Tips for the holidays#
- Book transfers in advance. Airport arrivals peak around December 20–23 and January 2–4.
- Reserve restaurants the day you arrive, especially for the 24th and the 31st.
- Budget for tips. The holiday staff work long days: tipping in the Dominican Republic.
- Check your passport now, not in December — you need a passport book, and renewals take time: do you need a passport for Punta Cana.
Where to stay#
