There is no bad month for warmth in Punta Cana: it's summer all year. What changes is the rain, the humidity, the storm risk and — the one most visitors don't know about — the seaweed.

Month by month#

January and February. The most comfortable months: dry, sunny, breezy, with pleasant evenings. Peak season, so book early.

March. Still dry and sunny, a little warmer. Spring breaks bring crowds some weeks.

April. Warm and mostly dry. Semana Santa (Easter week) is a national holiday and the beaches fill with Dominican families — lively, and a good time to see the country at play.

May. The transition: more humidity and the first regular showers. Prices drop.

June. Hurricane season officially begins on 1 June, but early-season storms are rare. Warm, with short downpours.

July and August. Hot and humid, with afternoon storms that pass quickly. European and Dominican summer holidays bring a second busy period.

September and October. The peak of hurricane season and the wettest, stickiest stretch of the year. The cheapest months, and the ones where travel insurance and flexible bookings matter most. See the hurricane season guide.

November. Rain easing, storm risk tailing off, crowds not yet back. A good shoulder month.

December. Dry season returns. Christmas and New Year are among the busiest and most expensive weeks of the year.

The seaweed matters more than the rain#

Sargassum — brown seaweed that drifts onto Caribbean beaches — makes more difference to a beach holiday than a few showers. It tends to arrive in the warmer months, but how much, when and on which beaches changes a lot from year to year. Resorts clean their beaches each morning, and some stretches of coast are hit harder than others. The sargassum guide explains what to expect and where to go when it's in.

Planning around the weather#

  • In the rainy months, do beaches and excursions in the morning; storms usually come later
  • From August to October, choose flexible bookings and consider travel insurance
  • The sun is strong every month — reef-safe sunscreen, a hat, and shade at midday
