The options#
| Where | Cost | Convenience | |
|---|---|---|---|
| eSIM | Online, before you fly | Higher per GB | Highest: live when you land |
| Claro tourist SIM, airport | Arrivals counter | Medium | High |
| Claro or Altice SIM, in town | Shops, supermarkets in Bávaro and Verón | Lowest | Needs an errand |
| Roaming | Your home carrier | Often highest | Zero effort |
| Resort Wi-Fi only | — | Free | Useless off-site |
Claro vs Altice#
Claro has the widest national coverage; Altice is comparable on the coast and sometimes cheaper. On the Punta Cana strip either works. If you're heading to Samaná or the mountains, Claro.
Registering#
Dominican law requires SIMs to be registered; bring your passport to the counter or shop. The eSIM route skips it.
What you'll use it for#
Uber, maps in Verón, WhatsApp (how everything in the DR is arranged: drivers, restaurants, Local Friends), excursion check-ins, and the Roavi Community thread for your dates. Money and cash is the other practical page; first time in Punta Cana the overview.
Ask before you land#
Which shop in Bávaro has the best tourist deal this month, and whether the airport counter is open at midnight: post your dates on Roavi Community and Local Friends who live here answer. A Local Friend can also walk you into the Claro shop and do it in Spanish in five minutes.
Landing in Punta Cana? Ask a local the practical questions first.
