Punta Cana is worth visiting for exactly one thing, and it is very good at it. The question is whether that thing is what you want.
The short verdict#
| You want | Worth it? |
|---|---|
| A beach and an all-inclusive, easy flights, good value | Yes |
| A honeymoon, a family week, a group trip | Yes (honeymoon, with kids) |
| A town to walk around, culture, history | No, that is Santo Domingo |
| The Dominican Republic itself | Only if you leave the resort |
| Surf, wind, a backpacker scene | No, that is the north coast |
What makes it worth it#
The beach: Bávaro and Arena Gorda are long, white and calm, among the best in the Caribbean. The resorts are close to the airport and the airport has direct flights from much of North America and Europe. The price per night, all-in, beats Cancún, Aruba and most of the islands (Punta Cana vs Cancún, vs Aruba). Saona Island and the Hoyo Azul are real days out (Saona, excursions worth it).
The three caveats#
Sargassum. Seaweed reaches some beaches in some months, mostly spring and summer; the resorts clear it daily but it can be ugly. The sargassum season says which months and which beaches.
Hurricane season. June to November, with August to October the highest risk. Most weeks are fine; some are not. Hurricane season in the DR and the best time to visit.
The bubble. Inside a resort you could be anywhere. The food is international, the staff are the only Dominicans you meet, and excursions and taxis are priced for people who do not know better (tourist traps). The country is outside the gate, and it is worth going out: Punta Cana off the resort, where to eat, downtown Punta Cana.
How long#
Four or five nights for most people; a week with one or two days out. How many days in Punta Cana, the 5-day itinerary, first time in Punta Cana.
Resort or apartment#
An all-inclusive for a first trip or a family; an apartment in Bávaro or Los Corales if you want to eat out and see something (Airbnb vs resort, on a budget).
With a Dominican#
The bubble opens fastest with someone who lives here: a colmado, a beach the resorts do not use, a real plate of food. Roavi has a few Local Friends in Punta Cana and many more in Santo Domingo; see Local Friends in Punta Cana, how to meet locals in Punta Cana, and ask on the Punta Cana forum first.
Nearby, each on its own: Cap Cana, Bayahibe, La Romana.
