Bangkok in November 2026: The Best Month, and Why

TL;DR: November is Bangkok's sweet spot for most travelers: monsoon ends, temperatures drop, Loy Krathong falls in the third week, and December's price surge hasn't hit yet. The only downside is that air quality can start dipping late in the month as agricultural burning season approaches. If you're picking one month to visit Bangkok, this is it.

I've spent every November in Bangkok for the last several years. It's genuinely the best time to be here — and yet most travel guides bury this because December through February gets all the marketing attention. Here's the honest case for November.

What makes November special

Weather flip-flops mid-month. Early November still has some monsoon tail — brief afternoon showers, some cloud cover. By around the 12th–15th, the switch flips and Bangkok enters its "cool dry" season: sunny, breezy, comfortable enough that rooftop dining becomes genuinely pleasant instead of a sweat-fest.

Loy Krathong — Thailand's beautiful festival of lights. In 2026 it falls on Wednesday November 25. Traditional celebration: people float candles + banana-leaf krathongs on rivers to release the past year's misfortunes. Bangkok's best viewing spots are along the Chao Phraya (Asiatique, Wat Arun, Iconsiam, Santichaiprakan Park in Old City). Get there by 6pm for the atmosphere; peak floating happens 8-10pm.

Prices are still shoulder-season. A 4-star hotel in Sukhumvit that will cost $150/night in late December is $85-100 in mid-November. Flights from the US/EU before Thanksgiving week are 20-30% cheaper than after.

Tourist crowds are building but not peak. You'll wait 15 minutes for Grand Palace security instead of 45. Restaurants that require a week's booking in December take a day's booking in November.

What to actually do in November

First half (Nov 1–15):

• Chao Phraya River activities (dinner cruise, temple hopping) — the river is calm, weather is cooler, sunset is a good hour
• Rooftop bars (Sky Bar, Vertigo, Above Eleven) — pleasant instead of sticky
• Chatuchak weekend market — walking is bearable
• Muay Thai fights at Rajadamnern or Lumpinee — outdoor / semi-outdoor doesn't feel oppressive

Second half (Nov 16–30):

• Everything above, plus:
• Loy Krathong on the 25th — plan around this
• Outdoor markets (Talad Rod Fai train market, Jodd Fairs) — genuinely pleasant evening temperatures
• Day trip to Ayutthaya (comfortable to walk the ruins in this weather)
• Bangkok Design Week if it overlaps (varies year to year, usually late Jan/early Feb, but worth checking)

What to book ahead in November

• A Loy Krathong dinner cruise if you want a great river view — sell out 2-3 weeks in advance
• Hotels for the week of the 22nd–29th — Loy Krathong drives a mini-surge
• Michelin restaurants (Nusara, Sorn, Le Du) — 2-3 weeks ahead for evening reservations
• Flights — book by early October for best pricing, prices climb weekly through November

What to skip in November

• Sky lantern releases at commercial venues — these are Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai) tradition (Yi Peng), and the ones in Bangkok are usually staged tourist events. If you want the real sky lantern experience, fly to Chiang Mai for Yi Peng (same week).
• Air-conditioning-optional accommodation — nights are cooler but not cool, you still want AC.
• Predicting the exact monsoon end — some years the rain hangs on till Nov 20. Buy travel insurance either way.

The one downside: air quality

Late November is when Thailand's burning season quietly starts. Agricultural burning in the north and (occasionally) neighboring countries pushes PM2.5 numbers up in Bangkok. Late November isn't bad yet — December-February is worse, March is the worst. If you have asthma or a respiratory sensitivity, bring a KN95 mask and check IQAir daily.

When NOT to pick November

• You want beach + Bangkok combined: Krabi and Phuket are still recovering from their monsoon in early-mid November. Prefer December-March for beaches.
• You want Songkran (water fight new year): that's April.
• You want minimum crowds: June (start of monsoon) or September (deep monsoon) have half the visitor volume.
