Cali's night is salsa, and the city has three versions of it: the melómano bars of San Antonio, where people listen as much as they dance; the salsotecas of Menga, where the city dances from Thursday to Saturday; and Juanchito, across the river, where the night ends at dawn with a live orchestra. Here is which is which, which night of the week, what it costs in 2026, and how to get home.
First, a class#
Caleño salsa is fast, danced on the feet, and nothing like the salsa taught in Europe or the United States. The schools teach a beginner enough in an afternoon to stand up at a salsoteca, and a private hour does more. Take the class the first day and the rest of the week is better. Then go out.
The three salsa nights#
San Antonio, to listen. The hilltop neighbourhood's bars are melómano bars: salsa from vinyl, posters of Héctor Lavoe and the Fania on the walls, people who know every record and dance only to the ones they love. Small, cheap, and the right first night. Dinner in the barrio before, the hill and the storytellers at sunset.
Menga, to dance. The avenue north of the city where the big salsotecas and the crossover clubs are, from Thursday to Saturday: dance floors, tables with bottles, orchestras some nights, a dressed-up caleño crowd that can all dance. Uber there and back.
Juanchito, until dawn. Across the Cauca river, twenty to thirty minutes away, the salsotecas where the city has danced since the seventies: live orchestras, a crowd that arrives at midnight and leaves at six. The real thing, and worth doing once, with people and by Uber door to door; the area around the clubs is not for walking at night.
The nights that are not salsa#
Granada is the restaurant and nightlife district: cocktail bars, craft beer, terraces, the place to eat before a club. The Parque del Perro in San Fernando has the student bars and the cheap beer. El Peñón is a quieter drink. The electronic and reggaetón clubs sit in Menga next to the salsotecas, and the Pance river on a Sunday is the morning after.
Which night of the week#
Thursday is the locals' night, when the salsotecas are full of caleños rather than visitors. Friday and Saturday are the big nights and the long ones; Juanchito is a Saturday. Sunday is the river by day and quiet at night. In the last week of December the Feria de Cali makes every night a party, with the salsódromo and free street verbenas (the Feria guide); in August the Petronio Álvarez fills the nights with the music of the Pacific (Cali in August).

Getting home#
Uber or DiDi, door to door, every time. Caleños do the same; it is not a tourist precaution. Do not walk between zones after dark, keep your phone away on the street, never leave a drink unattended and take nothing from strangers; the altitude is not a factor here but the heat and the aguardiente are, so drink water. With a caleño#
Which salsoteca on which night, which Juanchito club has the orchestra this Saturday, the melómano bar where the owner plays the record you ask for, the table where you can dance without being watched: that is what a caleño knows and no list can. Cali has more people listed on Roavi as local guides by the hour (Roavi calls them Local Friends) than any other Colombian city: a photo, languages, what they like to show and an hourly rate they set. You message them directly, agree the night and the price, and Roavi takes no commission. Their profiles are above.
Dance the right night with a caleño.
