Cali is not a city you visit to see things. You visit it to be somewhere: on a hill at sunset, in a cold river, on a dance floor at two in the morning. The sights fill a day and a half; the rest is salsa, heat, and the friendliest people in Colombia, who will tell you so. Here is what to do, what it costs in 2026, which salsa night is which, and how to split it over two or three days.
The essentials#
- Salsa, done properly. Caleño salsa is fast, on the feet, and nothing like what is taught in Europe or the United States. Take a class first (schools teach beginners in an afternoon), then go out: the melómano bars of San Antonio, where people play salsa from vinyl and listen as much as they dance; the salsotecas of Menga from Thursday to Saturday; and Juanchito, across the river, where the night ends at dawn. Cali, salsa capital explains the difference between the three.
- San Antonio's hill at sunset. The neighbourhood of painted houses and cafés above the centre, and the park and chapel on top where the city gathers at dusk, with storytellers (cuenteros) working the crowd. Dinner in the barrio after.
- Cristo Rey. The statue above the city on the western hills, with the whole Cauca valley below. Midday on a clear day, by taxi; the road is not for walking.
- The Pance river on a Sunday. South of the city, cold mountain water over stones, caleño families, food stalls. It is the city's Sunday plan and the best answer to the heat.
- The zoo. One of the best kept in Latin America, on the riverbank, with the animals of Colombia's four regions. A morning.
- The river boulevard and the cats. The Bulevar del Río through the centre, and the Gato del Río with its painted cats, the city's cheerful public art. Then the Loma de la Cruz for crafts.
- The centre, by day. La Ermita church by the river, Plaza de Cayzedo, San Francisco, the Teatro Municipal. Lunch here: sancocho de gallina, or chontaduro for dessert.
- The Feria de Cali, if it is December. From the 25th to the 30th the city is one party: the salsódromo parade, concerts, free street verbenas in the barrios. Book months ahead. The Feria guide.
- The Petronio Álvarez, if it is August. The festival of Pacific-coast music, marimba and viche, free and enormous. Cali in August.
- The food. Empanadas vallunas with ají, pandebono and champús on the street, chontaduro with salt and honey, lulada for the heat, marranitas and aborrajados on any corner.

In 2 or 3 days#
Two days. Day 1: the centre in the morning, lunch, San Antonio's hill for sunset, dinner in the barrio and a melómano bar. Day 2: the zoo in the morning, the Pance river at midday, a salsa class at dusk, and a salsoteca in Menga at night.
Three days. Add the boulevard and the cats, the Loma de la Cruz, Cristo Rey at midday, an afternoon of rest, and the long night: Juanchito, or a second salsoteca. In Spanish, Cali en 3 días has it by the hour.
A week. Classes every day. People come for a week and leave dancing.
Free#
San Antonio's hill and chapel at sunset, the storytellers, the river boulevard and the cats, the Loma de la Cruz, the churches of the centre, the Pance river (food is the only cost), the Feria's street verbenas, and most of the Petronio.
With kids#
The zoo; the Pance river, which is what caleño families do; the cats of the river; ice cream and champús on the boulevard; a daytime salsa class, which children pick up faster than adults; and Cristo Rey for the view.
At night#
Thursday is the locals' night and the clubs change week to week, which is the best reason to go out with a caleño. San Antonio for listening, Menga for dancing, Juanchito for dawn. Taxis or apps home, always.
What to skip#
The centre at night. A salsa show for tourists when the real thing is a class and a club away. A beach: the Pacific coast is a trip of its own. And Cali without dancing: as is Cali worth visiting says, people who come for the sights go home puzzled.
Getting around#
Taxis and ride apps for almost everything, cheap. The MIO bus system works for the centre and the boulevard. To Pance, a taxi or the bus route up through the south. Sleep in San Antonio, Granada or El Peñón.
Safety, in short#
City rules, and they matter more here than in Medellín: stay in the neighbourhoods above, apps or licensed taxis at night, no drinks from strangers, the centre by day only. Is Cali safe? has the detail.
With a caleño#
Salsa is the thing that is best learned with someone from here: the right school, the club worth going to on a Thursday and not a Saturday, the table where you can dance without being watched. Cali has more people listed on Roavi as local guides by the hour (Roavi calls them Local Friends) than any other Colombian city: a photo, languages, what they like to show and an hourly rate they set themselves. You message them directly and Roavi takes no commission. Their profiles are above. Cali tour guide compares this with a professional guide; how to meet locals in Cali covers the free ways.
