Cali is hot, flat and spread out, and the neighbourhood you sleep in matters more for safety and for the night than in Medellín or Bogotá. Four areas cover almost every visitor. Here is each one, where not to stay, and 2026 prices.
San Antonio: where most visitors should stay#
The bohemian hilltop barrio above the centre: colonial houses painted in colours, cafés and galleries, the best hostels and boutique hotels in the city, the park and chapel where the city gathers for sunset and the storytellers, and the melómano salsa bars on the streets below.
Stay here if it is your first visit, you are on a budget, or you want salsa and the city's best evening at the door.
Know that it is a hill, that the edge towards the centre and towards Siloé is where to be careful at night, and that the bars are loud on weekends. Stay on the lit streets around the park and the Carrera 10, and take an app ride back from anywhere outside the barrio.
Granada: for the night and the restaurants#
North of San Antonio and flatter: the restaurant and nightlife district, cocktail bars, craft beer, terraces, better hotels, and ten minutes by app ride to the salsotecas of Menga.
Stay here if you are a couple or a group here to go out, or want a modern hotel and the restaurants on foot.
Know that it is busier and more expensive than San Antonio, and Friday and Saturday are loud.
El Peñón: quiet by the river#
Between Granada and the river boulevard: a calm, upscale neighbourhood of apartments and mid-range hotels, the Bulevar del Río and the cats of the river on foot, the Parque del Gato, and a short ride to everything.
Stay here if you want quiet nights, a walk by the river, and a safe, residential feel.
Ciudad Jardín and the south: families and long stays#
The leafy south of the city: Ciudad Jardín, Pance and the neighbourhoods near the universities, with apartments, the newer chain hotels, shopping centres and the road to the Pance river.
Stay here if you are a family, have a car, or are staying a month for classes.
Know that everything else is twenty to forty minutes away through traffic.
Where not to stay#
The centre at night. Visit by day for La Ermita, the Plaza de Cayzedo and San Francisco; it empties and changes character after dark. Aguablanca and the eastern districts: no tourist reason to be there. "Near Cali" in Yumbo or Jamundí: an hour of traffic added to every evening.
What it costs#
Approximate 2026 prices per night for two. Cali is the cheapest of Colombia's big cities. The Feria in the last week of December doubles everything and sells out months ahead; the Petronio in August fills the city too.

How to choose in one line#

- The night and the restaurants: Granada.
- Quiet by the river: El Peñón.
- Family, a car, a month of classes: Ciudad Jardín or the south.
The practical things that matter#
Air conditioning or a fan. Cali is hot all year and the afternoons are the hottest in Colombia's big cities; a room without either is a bad night.
App rides at night. Uber and DiDi are how caleños move after dark; do not flag a taxi on the street. By day the MIO bus works for the centre and the boulevard.
Lit streets. In San Antonio and Granada stay on the streets with people; two blocks off them at midnight is another neighbourhood. Is Cali safe? has the detail.
The airport. Alfonso Bonilla Aragón is in Palmira, 30 to 45 minutes away; a taxi or app is 60,000 to 90,000 pesos, the shuttle bus to the terminal much less.
When. December for the Feria, August for the Petronio, February and July for the driest weather without the crowds.
Ask a caleño#
Which street in San Antonio is quiet, which hotel in Granada is one block off the noise, where to eat the first night: someone who lives here answers in a message. Cali has more people listed on Roavi as local guides by the hour (Roavi calls them Local Friends) than any other Colombian city: a photo, languages, what they like to show and an hourly rate they set. You message them directly and Roavi takes no commission. Their profiles are above.
