Teotihuacán#
The Avenue of the Dead, the Pyramids of the Sun and Moon, murals at Tepantitla. Bus from Terminal del Norte for opening. Climbing rules have tightened; check before promising yourself the summit. Good with a guide: the site has very few signs.
Puebla and Cholula#
Cholula's Great Pyramid, the largest by volume on earth, with a church on top. Then Puebla: Talavera tiles, the zócalo, mole poblano and cemitas. ADO buses from TAPO every half hour.
Tepoztlán#
A pueblo mágico under cliffs: climb to the Tepozteco temple (steep, 1–2 hours), eat at the market, buy an ice cream in a flavour you've never heard of. Weekends are busy with chilangos; go midweek.
Xochimilco#
The canals of the old lake city. Rent a trajinera as a group (prices are per boat, per hour), bring food and drinks, let a mariachi boat pull alongside. Go with locals if you can; it's a party, not a tour.
Taxco#
A silver-mining hill town of white houses and VW Beetle taxis, three hours south. A long day; good if you love hill towns and jewellery.
Tolantongo#
Turquoise hot-spring pools built into a canyon wall. Photos don't lie, but it's 3.5 hours each way. Stay a night.

What is the best day trip from Mexico City?
Teotihuacán if you haven't been: an hour away, the biggest pyramids in the Americas. Puebla if you want food and a colonial city. Tepoztlán for mountains and a market. How do I get to Teotihuacán without a tour?
Buses leave Terminal del Norte (Autobuses del Norte metro) every 15–20 minutes, about an hour, very cheap. Arrive for opening and climb before the heat. Note that climbing the Pyramid of the Sun has been restricted in recent years; check current rules. Is Puebla doable in a day?
Yes. Two hours by ADO bus from TAPO. Cholula's Great Pyramid (with a church on top) in the morning, Puebla's centre and mole poblano in the afternoon, back by night. It's better as an overnight if you have time.Is Xochimilco a day trip?
It's inside the city, about an hour south by light rail or car. Half a day: rent a trajinera boat as a group, bring food and drinks, hire a mariachi boat if the mood strikes. Are Mexico City day-trip tours worth it?
They save planning, not money. Buses to Teotihuacán, Puebla and Tepoztlán are cheap and easy. A tour or a Local Friend adds context and removes logistics.
