Punta Cana is a beach you fly to, and the best trips treat the resort as the base, not the destination.
Day one: land, beach, settle#
Transfer to the resort (how), the beach by mid-afternoon, dinner on site, early night. Book nothing.
Day two: Saona Island#
The one excursion everyone should do, on a weekday, with a company that leaves early and stops at the natural pool on the way back. Bring cash for the beach. Saona day trip explains catamaran vs speedboat and what's included.
Day three: beach morning, Dominican evening#
Beach and pool until four. Then the evening that makes the trip: El Cortecito or Los Corales for seafood on the sand, or Verón or Friusa for the Punta Cana where people live: a colmado, a plate of chicharrón, bachata at a volume you didn't expect. Go with someone who lives here (why).
Day four: adventure day#
Either Scape Park and Hoyo Azul (cenote, zip lines, caves, half a day) or buggies to Macao Beach (mud, a cave swim, the best public beach). Not both; you'll want the afternoon.
Day five: slow morning, fly#
Beach, a last swim, the transfer. If you have a late flight, Downtown Punta Cana for lunch and shopping on the way.
The other versions#
- 4 days: drop the adventure day; do the off-resort evening on day two after Saona.
- 7 days: add a Santo Domingo day for the Zona Colonial and a free beach day, or an overnight in Las Terrenas. The 7-day DR itinerary goes further. 3 days is the long weekend.
Practical#
How many days, best time to visit, what it costs, excursions worth it, tourist traps, getting around, what to wear.
Day three, properly#
Post your dates on Roavi Community: travellers here the same days appear together, and Local Friends who live in Bávaro and Verón reply. A Local Friend for day three is the difference between a resort week and a trip to the Dominican Republic.
Five days in Punta Cana? Give one evening to someone who lives there.
