Most people asking this are in Punta Cana, or deciding between the two. The honest answer depends on one thing: do you want the country or the beach.
The short verdict#
| You want | Worth it? |
|---|---|
| A real city, history, food, nightlife | Yes |
| The Dominican Republic beyond the resort | Yes |
| A beach holiday | No, go to Punta Cana or the north coast |
| A day trip from Punta Cana | Only with an early start; better as a night or two |
| A cruise-day stop | Yes, the Zona Colonial is walkable from the port |
What makes it worth it#
The Zona Colonial is the first European city in the Americas, and it is lived in, not a museum: the Calle Las Damas, the cathedral, the Alcázar de Colón, and plazas full of Dominicans in the evening (the Zona Colonial guide). The food is the real thing, from a comedor's plate of the day to the fritura stands and the chimis at night (street food). Baseball at the Estadio Quisqueya in the winter season is the loudest night in the Caribbean (a game in the DR). The Malecón at sunset, the colmados with their speakers, the bachata and merengue in the bars (nightlife). And prices are the country's, not the resort's.
What makes it not worth it#
The beaches. Boca Chica and Juan Dolio are a drive away and ordinary next to Punta Cana's. The traffic is real. Parts of the city are not for walking at night, and the heat in the middle of the day is heavier than on the coast. If a trip is a week on a sunbed, Santo Domingo will feel like a city, because it is one.
How long#
Two days: Santo Domingo in 2 days. Three with a day trip: 3 days, day trips from Santo Domingo. Things to do has the full list; where to stay says Zona Colonial for a visit, Piantini for a longer stay.
From Punta Cana#
A day trip means two and a half to three and a half hours each way and four or five hours in the city; leave by seven or skip it. One or two nights at the start or end of the week is the version people are glad they did. Santo Domingo or Punta Cana compares the two, Santo Domingo to Punta Cana has the buses and transfers.
When#
December to April is dry and cooler; the baseball season runs October to January. The rest of the year is hotter and wetter in short afternoon bursts; Santo Domingo in December and in April have the detail.
Safety#
Fine in the visited neighbourhoods with city rules. Is Santo Domingo safe?
With a Dominican#
Santo Domingo is where most of Roavi's Dominican Local Friends live, more than any other city on the platform. A few hours with one is the difference between seeing the Zona Colonial and being in it: the comedor, the colmado, the game. Local Friends in Santo Domingo, how rent a friend works in the Dominican Republic, and the Santo Domingo forum for a question first.
