Almost every first-time visitor to the Dominican Republic books Punta Cana without knowing there's a choice. There is, and it changes the trip.
The one-line answer#
Punta Cana is the beach. Santo Domingo is the Dominican Republic.
Punta Cana: the resort coast#
Punta Cana and Bávaro are a long run of white-sand beaches on the island's eastern tip, lined with all-inclusive resorts and a short drive from their own airport. The water is calm, the sand is flat and you don't have to plan anything.
What you won't find much of is Dominican daily life. The resort area was built for visitors, and many people spend a week there without meeting anyone who isn't serving them.
Best for: beach and pool, all-inclusive, families with small kids, a first Caribbean holiday. Start with things to do in Punta Cana.
Santo Domingo: the capital#
Santo Domingo is a city of millions, and it's where the country lives. The Zona Colonial is the oldest European city in the Americas — the first cathedral, the first street, Columbus's son's palace — and its streets fill at night with bars, restaurants and music. The food is better and cheaper, merengue and bachata are everywhere, and the Malecón runs along the sea.
The city itself has a rocky seafront rather than a beach; for sand, Boca Chica and Juan Dolio are a short drive east.
Best for: history, food, nightlife, meeting Dominicans, lower prices. Start with things to do in Santo Domingo and the Zona Colonial.
Side by side#
| Punta Cana | Santo Domingo | |
|---|---|---|
| Beaches | Excellent, on your doorstep | Short drive to Boca Chica and Juan Dolio |
| Culture and history | Little | The Zona Colonial and more |
| Food | Mostly resort, unless you go out | Excellent and cheap |
| Nightlife | Show clubs and resort bars | Real city nightlife |
| Prices outside the hotel | Higher | Lower |
| Airport | PUJ, close to the resorts | SDQ, about 30 minutes from the city |
| Feels like | A holiday | A country |
Can you do both?#
Yes, and for a week it's the best version of the trip: three or four days in Santo Domingo for the city and the food, then three or four in Punta Cana to do nothing on a beach. The drive takes roughly two and a half to three and a half hours; bus, private transfer and rental car all work. The details: how to get from Santo Domingo to Punta Cana, and a full plan in the 7-day Dominican Republic itinerary.
Tip: fly into one airport and out of the other, so you never drive the same road twice.
Where to stay#
In Santo Domingo, the Zona Colonial for walking everywhere and Piantini or Naco for a more modern base: where to stay in Santo Domingo. In Punta Cana, it depends on the kind of beach and resort you want: where to stay in Punta Cana.
Safety#
Both are visited safely by huge numbers of people. Santo Domingo is a big city and needs big-city common sense — keep your phone out of sight, use app taxis at night. Punta Cana's resort areas are more sheltered. The detail: is Santo Domingo safe and is Punta Cana safe.
See either one with a local#
The fastest way to get past the tourist version of either place is a day with someone who lives there. Local Friends in Santo Domingo can take you through the Zona Colonial and out on a Friday night; Local Friends in Punta Cana can get you off the resort to a beach and a lunch you'd never find alone. You message them directly and plan the day together.
